Natasha Wright
"UNTITLED", Drawing on Paper, Ink and Acrylic, Nude Woman in Black, Cream, White

2019

About the Item

Natasha Wright's art probes the politics of representation of the female form. Gender, sexuality, vulnerability and power, seduction and aggression - these dualities motivate the dynamics of her work. The drawing shown here, "UNTITLED", in ink and acrylic paint on paper, is a supreme example – bold yet simple in its elegance, the cream and grey is both background and body, the black and white outline of the woman vibrates through the background. Measuring only 17x14" in size, it's a discrete but powerful statement of affirmation. From Natasha Wright – "The paintings reference the political and the personal. The representation of females throughout history is considered alongside contemporary references. The Venus of Willendorf, Mary Magdalena, The Three Graces and Cardi B are some of my many muses." Natasha Wright's paintings were shown recently at Fresh Paint, a group show at Art of Our Century Gallery in Greenwich Village, New York, from February 27 to March 22, 2020. In May 2017 Natasha earned her Masters of Fine Arts, (Painting) from The New York Studio School. She was awarded The New York Studio School Scholarship, The Jane Chace Carroll Merit Award and the LCU Award. In 2017 she co-founded JMN Artists, a curatorial collaboration and artists’ initiative. Natasha has exhibited in New Zealand, Australia and The United States. Her work has been included in publications such as Harpers Bazaar, Art Critical, The New Zealand Artist Magazine, The Denizen and The New Zealand Herald. Natasha's work is also held in private collections in Australia, New Zealand, The United Kingdom and The United States.

  • "TRANSFIGURATION", abstract watercolor, landscape, trees, water, green, blue sky
    By Fleur Thesmar
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
TRANSFIGURATION is a new watercolor on Fabriano paper by Fleur Thesmar. The artwork measures 30x22", and is a structured composition in tones of green, blue, umber, rose and teal. Bordering on abstraction and figuration, a landscape of trees and water and sky appears to open up symmetrically, possibly revealing a spirit. From Fleur Thesmar – "Inspired by a mathematical model, I painted this abstraction which slowly took on the form of a person. The shivering brushstrokes create a textured relief, while the person seems to emerge from and recede into the background." Having moved her family from France to America, artist Fleur Thesmar closely observed the changes in her world – from the seemingly obvious such as surrounding landscapes, the light of day and weather, the flowers, trees and shorelines – to the smaller less obvious shifts, such as how one behaves in a new world, in a new home, how one cherishes certain belongings and certain memories. Her artistic practice is borne out of that close observation and shift in perspective, and has led to a number of successful gallery shows in the U.S. and internationally. Fleur Thesmar has shown at Beacon Gallery in Boston MA, 440 Gallery, Brooklyn NY, Old West Museum, Cheyenne WY, Belmont Art Gallery, Belmont MA...

This work clearly has homosexual overtones which in the mid-'40s was as daring as showing nudity. I am not sure if this was the artist's intention but the salesgirl and the model look identical and she signs it twice Shermond. Added to this is a strobe light effect where the model's image is partly replicated giving the impression of 2 figures. She's lost in thought pondering the notion of removing the bows and seeing the consequences. Meanwhile, the sales girls ( perhaps her alta ego - perhaps an admirer ) eggs her on. Caption: "You can always remove the bows if you think they're too fussy." Cover cartoon for unknown publication - Signed "Shermund" twice in the lower right image, dated on verso, and captioned in graphite in the lower margin. Original Matte and not framed - Barbara Shermund...
