About the Item
A lush, historic watercolor figurative landscape by C. Harry Allis (American, 1870-1938). Signed and dated "C. Harry Allis 1919" lower right. Displayed in a distressed, antique carved wood frame. UV, non-Glare, Acrylite plexi-glass. Image, 16"H x 24"W.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Harry Allis was a landscape painter in the impressionist style and worked in both oil and watercolor. He lived primarily in Michigan and California. He taught at the Detroit Museum Art School, gave private art classes, and was an art critic for the Detroit Free Press.
He studied at the Detroit Museum of Art, with Harry Eaton in New York City, and with Bouguereau in Paris. In 1912, he moved to Southern California and lived in Long Beach and Los Angeles, except for the early 1920s when he was in New York. He was active in the local art scene until his death in Los Angeles in 1938.
Affiliations included the National Art Club, the Society of Western Artists, 1896-1914, and the Salmagundi Club.

About the artist:
A native of Syracuse, John E. De Tore was born in 1902.
DeTore enjoyed painting continuously since the age of 8. Although he became an engineer with the Niagara Mohawk Power corporation he carried on elective training in the required branches of art.
He took seriously to the watercolor medium from 1940 and by 1955 he was well known for his decisively composed watercolor landscapes and their rich, deep chromatics - earning him acknowledgment in the American Artist Magazine November 1961 issue.
