Carl Almquist
A Seraph (no. 1)

1887

About the Item

Framed dimensions 18.5 x 17.5 inches One of two original drawings of seraphim created for the British firm of stained-glass designers Shrigley and Hunt. The drawings are by the celebrated Swedish-born artist/designer Carl Almquist (1849-1924), who was the firm’s principal designer. The images were transferred to stained glass as part of the large window “Christ in Glory Worshipped by Angels,” created for and installed in Christchurch, Latchford (Cheshire, UK) in 1887, where they are still a central feature of the church. These two images (of four, total) are instantly recognizable, each in its own kite-shaped surround. These drawings represent the six-winged seraphim, the highest order of angels, whose name means “the burning ones,” closest to the throne of God. (Yeshayahu/Isaiah 6:1-7) The bespoke, hand-cut mounts are museum archival, and the distressed frames are leafed in 22K gold. Framed dimensions 18.5 x 17.5 inches

"My work principally consists of deeply abstracted figure compositions--intuitive constructions that begin with random marks establishing larger masses of torsos, heads, and limbs in an undefined setting. The emphasis is almost purely on intuition. The figures are born of their surrounding environment, emerging only partially and fugitively from the layers of pigment. A narrative is evident but never overt. A crown, a shield, a boat, a wheel. Though the subject has recently coalesced around my reading of Dante and Shakespeare, the settings remain extremely vague- a beach, an interior, a woodland. The paintings are, in the end, meditations on the relationship between the protagonists in a wordless drama. In my paintings, I use a cold wax medium combined with dry pigments, oil paint, and embedded fragments of burlap. The surfaces eventually build up into a dense, rugged terrain." --Thaddeus Radell

DANNY GALIEOTE Riptide Study Conté and Gouache on Archival Paper 30 x 24 1/2 inches, Framed Danny Galieote has a propensity for capturing the quintessentials of Americana in works that blend realist narratives with a pop sensibility. The works are reminiscent of classic, vintage postcard imagery with an undercurrent of poetic, and often surprising, juxtaposition. The stylistic effect is a blend between the old-school charm of Norman Rockwell, with the unexpected twist of surrealist René Magritte. JoAnne Artman Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Danny Galieote with a focus on iconic American summertime scenes. Galieote belongs to a group of contemporary artists and writers that are part of a revitalized interest in American regionalist history and art. The American Regionalist art...
