Domenick Capobianco (American, b. 1928), Three Abstract Figural Composition, Ink on Paper, 2013, 2015, each signed and dated lower right, in wood frames. Larger: image: 6" H x 4" W; frame: 9.25" H x 7.25" W x 0.5" D. Provenance: From the Collection of the artist. Note: Domenick Capobianco is a graduate of Washington University at St. Louis, a Rutgers Fellow (1979), and a Guggenheim Fellow (1984/85). He was an educator and mentor at Rutgers University. Capobianco’s work can be found in collections worldwide, including: The Academie des Beaux-Arts, Ljubjana, Slovenia, The Albertina Museum, Vienna, Austria, and The M.V. Nesterov Museum, Ufa, Russia. Alongside his artist wife Elfi Schuselka (Austrian, b. 1940) he frequently exhibited with the famed 55 Mercer Gallery in New York.

Domenick Capobianco, born in Salerno, Italy in 1928, is an artist of significant international standing, recognized for his exceptional talent and dedication to artistic excellence. Primarily known for his post-modernist paintings and sculptures, characterized by their bright, eye-catching colors, his work aligns with the "Second New York School" of art. He was honored with the prestigious Rutgers Fellowship (1979) and the coveted Guggenheim Fellowship (1984/85). His influence extended beyond his own artistic practice through his impactful role as an educator and mentor at Rutgers University. "My work principally consists of deeply abstracted figure compositions--intuitive constructions that begin with random marks establishing larger masses of torsos, heads, and limbs in an undefined setting. The emphasis is almost purely on intuition. The figures are born of their surrounding environment, emerging only partially and fugitively from the layers of pigment.
A narrative is evident but never overt. A crown, a shield, a boat, a wheel. Though the subject has recently coalesced around my reading of Dante and Shakespeare, the settings remain extremely vague- a beach, an interior, a woodland.
