Horace Vernet (French 1789-1863), Study for “The Artist’s Studio” 1820.
This is a charming detailed pen and ink study for “Vernet’s The Artist’s Studio” which was painted in 1820. Interestingly the study includes a further penciled section to the right that was not included in the painting.
Vernet was the son of the famous French painter Carle Vernet who himself was the son of Claude Joseph Vernet the prominent French landscape painter. Horace Vernet was well known for his Neoclassical style of painting and his commissions for Napoléon III of France, these included many Napoleonic battle scenes and horse paintings.
