Felix Topolski (1907-1989) was one of the 20th century’s great documentary artists. His deft hand and quick line vividly captured the essence of the subjects he drew. He covered the leading events of the time, important political and cultural figures, events, places and movements; Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, General Douglas MacArthur; Laurence Olivier, Bob Dylan, Allen Ginsberg to name a few.
WW11 had solidified his reputation as an illustrator of repute. In 1950 Topolski was invited by Jawaharlal Nehru to attend the Independence Day celebrations in a young India. His government had bought Topolski’s epic painting The East, bought to be hung in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. Based on his travels during and after the war, Gandhi’s assassination fills the centre of this monumental piece.
Topolski was a master of the large mural, seen in his epic 100ft painting of the Coronation of the Queen, which hangs at Buckingham Palace but he was also skilled at producing small fluid portraits which he would often make without the sitter noticing, capturing a naturalness not often found in portraiture..
In the early 40’s Topolski visited India and made a number of sketches of Gandhi. It is believed this poignant drawing by Topolski was made during his trip in 1950 with Nehru and referencing sketches from his previous visit.

In Isabel's own words:
Wheel of Fortune
Sometimes life is good and you are at the top, you feel that finally things are working out and that you deserve this success after many struggles. But just as you stride down the street with a spring in your step the wheel turns another click and you find yourself on the down again. Maybe you lost your wallet, made a mistake that cost you alot of money or your partner met someone more interesting. But do not fear, because the wheel of fortune is forever turning and soon you shall be at the top again like a king. Just make sure to enjoy it while you are there.

About Isabel Rock and her work:
Taking inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints and Indian miniature painting Rock has developed a unique collage technique that combines bold structures with large-scale woodblock prints and intricate detailing. The subject is a grand mixture of humour, drama, hidden morals, fanciful characters, modern culture, mythical beings and fantastical situations.
Rock creates a world that pulls you in and demands your attention. Quality of line is paramount, the drawings are created using a dipping pen and acrylic ink. An essential tool is a squirrel’s hair brush that gives incredible fine lines and was purchased on her travels in India.
Born in Hammersmith, London in 1981, Rock knew her destiny was to be an artist. Studying Fine Art Printmaking at The University of Brighton and graduating with First Class Honours in 2004 she went on to do a Masters Degree at The Royal College of Art in London, continuing her studies in printmaking and drawing, graduating in 2008.
Her first solo show at Bearspace Gallery in Deptford, London in April 2009 sold out and was the beginning of a career that continues to rise. Rock participated in the first ever India Art Fair represented by Art 1821...

Isabel Rock , 'Staring at the Sun' 99.7 x 70.2cm, collaged woodblock print and acrylic ink on 410gsm Somerset Satin paper, 2011
In Isabels own words;
'Staring at the Sun'
The man stood on the mountain and stared at the golden sun. The sun stared back at him, its heat blazed and burnt his eyes, the birds sang a maddening tune like they were pecking at his eardrums.
The man pointed his finger and shouted, ' you lied to me' at the sun.
The sun laughed and said 'you wanted to believe me. I told you what you had already decided in your head to be the most convenient thing for you.'
The man raged and hopped in what looked to the birds like a beautiful dance.
'Trickery, skulduggery!' he shouted. 'villain, thief, abomination!'
The sun blinked and smiled calmly. It had seen a lot from humans, there was nothing that could surprise it now.

As a black and white comic, the absence of color allows the artist to focus on using shading, line work, and contrast to convey the narrative and emotions effectively. Black and white comics creates a distinct and dramatic atmosphere, emphasizing the story's mood and capturing the readers' attention.
