About the Item
Born German, Ferdinand Heilbuth (1826-1889) made most of his artistic career in France and specialized in outdoor genre scenes. This gouache watercolor depicts a young woman lying in the grass, contemplating the sea, holding in her hand some wild flowers picked during her walk. It is one of the elegant vacation scenes inviting the viewer to daydream which made Ferdinand Heilbuth’s reputation.
Heilbuth participated in the creation of the Society of French Watercolorists in 1879 and his exhibitions there were particularly admired. Famous art critic Albert Wolff even wrote in Le Figaro on 22nd November 1889 that he was, in rendering nature, “a master in his watercolors even more than in his oil paintings”.
This piece was part of the collection of the famous French dealer and collector François Gérard Seligmann (1912-1999).

Ferdinand Heilbuth
Ferdinand Heilbuth was a German-born French painter. He was born in Hamburg in 1826 and died in Paris in 1889, having become a French citizen in 1876. Heilbuth is buried in Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris. This genre painter whose talent has the characteristics of nobility, the liveliness of color and accent in expression, exhibited many times at the Royal Academy in London. His works were also shown in the Grosvenor Gallery London, as well as at the Boston Athenaeum. Besides London and Paris, the artist had working stints in Antwerp, Munich and Rome. Heilbuth won Medals at the Paris salon in 1857, 1858 and 1861. It is interesting to note that Vincent van Gogh was an admirer of Ferdinand’s work.
