Né en Allemagne, Ferdinand Heilbuth (1826-1889) a mené l'essentiel de sa carrière artistique en France et s'est spécialisé dans les scènes de genre en extérieur. Cette aquarelle à la gouache représente une jeune femme allongée dans l'herbe, contemplant la mer, tenant à la main des fleurs sauvages cueillies au cours d'une promenade. Elle est caractéristique des élégantes scènes de plein air invitant à la rêverie qui ont fait la réputation de l'artiste.
Heilbuth a participé à la création de la Société des Aquarellistes Français en 1879 et ses expositions y ont été particulièrement admirées. Le célèbre critique d'art Albert Wolff a même écrit dans Le Figaro du 22 novembre 1889 qu'il était, dans sa représentation de la nature, « un maître dans ses aquarelles encore plus que dans ses peintures à l'huile ».
Cette œuvre faisait partie de la collection du célèbre marchand et collectionneur français François Gérard Seligmann (1912-1999).

Ferdinand Heilbuth
Ferdinand Heilbuth was a German-born French painter. He was born in Hamburg in 1826 and died in Paris in 1889, having become a French citizen in 1876. Heilbuth is buried in Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris. This genre painter whose talent has the characteristics of nobility, the liveliness of color and accent in expression, exhibited many times at the Royal Academy in London. His works were also shown in the Grosvenor Gallery London, as well as at the Boston Athenaeum. Besides London and Paris, the artist had working stints in Antwerp, Munich and Rome. Heilbuth won Medals at the Paris salon in 1857, 1858 and 1861. It is interesting to note that Vincent van Gogh was an admirer of Ferdinand’s work.
