François FLAMENG Paris 1856 - 1923 Diana the Huntress floating in the clouds, fan project 1893 Watercolor and gouache on wove paper Signed and dated lower right 25 x 70 cm sheet (length measured on the shortest central part) 50 x 81 cm frame Beautiful stuccoed wood frame from the Napoleon III period Traces of oxidation from the old mounting on the border Good condition A student of Cabanel, Hédouin and Laurens at the Beaux-Arts, he exhibited at the Salon from 1875. He was a friend of Sargent and Helleu, other great painters of the Belle Epoque who, like him, were also great social portraitists. Appreciated by Tsar Alexander III, he was invited to Russia in 1894 to paint numerous portraits of aristocrats and members of the imperial family. Along with Constant, Gervex, Maignan and Merson, he decorated the new Salle Favart, destroyed in 1887. He also designed the “Paris” panel for the main room of the Train Bleu restaurant at the Gare de Lyon. He began teaching at the Beaux-Arts in 1905, and was appointed painter to the army in 1914. Very famous in his day, many of his works are held in museums around the world: Ottawa, Chicago, Manchester, San Francisco, Washington, Beaune, Bordeaux, Marseille ,Orsay, Petit Palais, Rouen, Rennes, London, Moscow, etc....

As a young art student studying fashion illustration, he joined the Royal Artillery at the beginning of WWII but soon became a part of the Special Operations Executive (SOE). He was sent to France as a radio operator but three and a half months later was caught by the Gestapo, tortured, given a death sentence and then selected for slave labour. He spent the subsequent war years in three French prisons and five concentration and labour camps, including Dachau. He still managed to continue to draw in some of the camps. Following the war, Stonehouse went to the US and continued his career as a fashion artist painting for magazines like Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Elizabeth Arden.
