About the Item

Attributed to Gabriel-Jacques de Saint-Aubin (Paris, 1724 – 1780) Le Menuet, circa 1765–1770 Red chalk on paper 13 3/8 x 8 1/4 in (34 x 21 cm) Verso: black chalk and red chalk Unsigned Provenance: Alphonse Kann Collection, sale Paris, December 1920 Lucien Wolff, Paris Private collection, United States Private collection, France Long of uncertain attribution, this elegant drawing was recently rediscovered in the archives of the 1920 Alphonse Kann sale. While names such as Charles-Nicolas Cochin the Younger and Louis-Rolland Trinquesse were at times proposed, the work is now mostly attributed to Gabriel de Saint-Aubin, whose spirited style and lively execution it strongly evokes. The scene of the menuet, a quintessential courtly dance of the 18th century, is rendered with remarkable economy of means and finesse in the portrayal of movement and atmosphere. The spontaneity of the line, the acute sense of observation, and the charm of the composition have earned unanimous recognition for the drawing’s quality, placing it firmly within the refined and sociable spirit of Parisian taste in the Ancien Régime.
