Giuseppe Piattoli
Drawing Rococo Florentine figurative satirical 18th century watercolor

ante 1786

About the Item

This is the preparatory drawing, watercolor and ink on paper (with wooden frame and gilded plate 51 x 44 cm, unframed measures 30 x 22 cm), by the hand of Giuseppe Piattoli for one of the 40 plates printed by Carlo Lasinio (Treviso, 1759 - Pisa 1838) for the first series of "Proverbi Toscani" published in Florence in 1786 by Giuseppe Pagni and Nicolò Bardi. In this specific case, as stated at the top in cursive pen, "Married man is a bird in a cage," a title that would later be corrected to "Married man is bird in a cage" in the final version. The scene clearly reflects the phrase, as can be seen by the man sitting inside a square cage in front of a woman who laughs proudly at him, holding his pants. This is a very rare piece and an interesting and detailed example of the fashion of the Rococo style. The drawing was exhibited in 2025 at the exhibition "Centuries of Satire" at the LORENZO VIANI GALLERY OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART in Viareggio and is published in FABIO SOTTILI, Giuseppe Piattoli, Florence 2024, p. 96
