Gustav Likan"Conversation with Friends" Line Drawing of Three People at a Table Socializing
About the Item
Graphite on Natural Toned Paper
Art Size: 9 x 6 inches
Framed: 15.5 x 18 inches
An expressive drawing of three friends sitting around a table rendered in lively gestural lines of graphite on natural toned paper. The feeling of the scene is pleasant, relaxed, and leisurely. This drawing exemplifies Gustav Likan’s exceptional mastery as a draftsman. It highlights his ability to describe the space, weight, and anatomy of the subjects’ figures using simple lines and shapes. The piece has a retro, vintage feel, and depicts Midcentury Modern furniture and clothing styles. Signed: bottom right “Likan”.
This drawing is handsomely framed with a wide black matte and an ornate frame with gold leaf finish. Transparent glass protects the drawing on paper from the elements, and the back of the framing is sealed with black paper. D Rings and wire installed on the back ensure this piece is ready to hang.
About Gustav Likan:
Born in Yugoslavia in 1912, Gustav Likan achieved international fame as an artist early in life. He has long been noted in Europe for his portraits of royalty and heads of state. After coming to America, his color genius caught fire and he emerged as one of the most important colorists of the twentieth century.
Likan studied restoration under the greatest European masters. This served to further develop his skills. His summers were spent in Holland, Italy, and France, exploring the museums and sketching and painting 10 to 14 hours a day.
After earning fame as a portrait artist, Likan immigrated to South America and then to the United States, arriving in Chicago in 1957. He was promptly appointed as an instructor at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, where he taught until 1967.
Possessed of a highly individualistic philosophy, Likan was an outspoken critic of gimmickry in art, referring to it distastefully as “intellectual conjecture”. Instead, he believed in the unifying nature of art stating:
“The function of art is the creation of beauty. The artist has the power to create in others his pleasurable excitement, thereby sharing with them aesthetic experiences.”

Born in Yugoslavia in 1912, Gustav Likan early in life achieved international fame as an artist. He has long been noted in Europe for his portraits of royalty and heads of state. Since coming to America, his color genius caught fire and he emerged as one of the most important colorists of the twentieth century. Considered a prodigy, Likan won early acclaim in academic circles. So great was his grasp and talent, he flew through the ordinarily rigorous years of required draftsmanship and human figure drawing in half the usual time. Recognizing his extraordinary talents, the Munich Academy of Fine Arts bestowed the special honor of Master Student upon Likan. He was given his own private studio and model. Considering the orthodoxy and conservatism of this institution, the elevation of a mere boy to such a status stands as a tribute to genius discovered. Likan studied restoration under the best European masters of this rare art. This served to further develop his skills. Summers were spent in Holland, Italy and France...haunting the museums, sketching and painting 10 to 14 hours a day even during vacations. After earning his fame as a portrait artist, Likan immigrated to South America, where in 1948 he was hired by Eva Peron to paint murals for the country's churches, hospitals and schools, and then to the United States, arriving in Chicago in 1957. He was immediately appointed to the staff of the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts as an instructor, where he taught until 1967, and where his lushly colored canvases earned him the title "father of acrylics".

The Body is a History - Muscular Male Nude, Graphite Drawing on Paper
By Rick Sindt
Located in Chicago, IL
Rick Sindt's knowledge of the male physique is evident in this exquisite drawing of a nude male. The subject sits on the ground with his body twisted away from the viewer. We see the defined musculature of his posterior. The artwork is framed in white wood with a black mat.

Shifting the historic male gaze into a male-on-male gaze, this body of work anchors its
exploration of queer culture in relationships and introspection. Beginning with a survey of
several photo archives, I overwhelmingly encountered pictures that fit into two distinct
categories: spectacular demonstrations or public displays of sexuality. All of these images were overtly political. Then, I began to find a subset of more intimate images. Typically, these were images submitted by loved ones or donated to foundations after someone’s death. These images depicted common, tender scenes.
Working my way through these images, I reflected on D. A. Miller’s assertion that gay
identity, to which we have entrusted our politics and ethics, stands in an essentially reductive
relation to the queer desires on which it is based. And David Halperin’s argument that, “identity has become the preferred category for thinking about homosexuality. Moreover, it has been promoted at the direct expense of pleasure or feelings or subjectivity.” This left me asking the questions: how is queer culture transmitted if not genealogically? Is there a universal queer experience? What is queer sensibility and subjectivity and can it be visually represented?
