About the Item
Story illustration for “The Gay Banditti” by I. A. R. Wylie for The Saturday Evening Post, published February 26, 1938, pages 6-7.
The full caption reads: “‘It’s high time we met,’ he told her, holding her hand with a brutal disregard for rings, and speaking with a faint note of severity.”
This illustration introduces Ida Alexa Ross Wylie’s "The Gay Banditti," serialized in The Saturday Evening Post from February 26 to March 26, 1938. The popular story was adapted later that year into the romantic comedy film The Young in Heart, starring Janet Gaynor, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Paulette Goddard. Wylie, a novelist, screenwriter, and advocate for women's suffrage, tells the story of the Carlyons, a once-affluent family of con artists, who, after a failed scheme, target the kind spinster, Miss Ellen Fortune. Though initially planning to exploit her, the Carlyons are unexpectedly moved by her kindness and generosity.
The image shows Duncan McGrath, in his officer's uniform, greeting his love interest, George-Ann Carlyon, in a hotel lounge before a regimental dinner. The accompanying caption reads: “’It’s high time we met,’ he told her, holding her hand with a brutal disregard for rings, and speaking with a faint note of severity.”
The artwork is a prime example of Henry Raleigh's distinctive style. Known for his elegant depictions of high-society life, Raleigh captured the glamour of the era through fluid lines and graceful compositions. His talent propelled him into the Manhattan nightlife he illustrated, and he became a sought-after artist for publications like The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and Vanity Fair. Despite his success, Raleigh's lavish lifestyle eventually led to financial ruin. By the late 1930s, public taste and cultural attitudes shifted with the Great Depression and the looming threat of World War II. Raleigh’s once-celebrated style fell out of favor. Tragically, Raleigh's personal and financial struggles culminated in his suicide in 1944. This colorful illustration, with its dynamic composition and expressive linework, stands as a testament to Raleigh's artistic skill.
