Hyacinthe Colin de Vermont
The Death of Attis, 18th Century French Red Chalk Drawing, Greek Mythology

About the Item

Red chalk on paper Image size: 9 x 7 inches (23 x 17.75 cm) Acid free mount The Greek god Attis was the spouse of Cybele, the fertility goddess.  He was from Phrygia, a kingdom in central Anatolia, and is often depicted wearing a Phrygian cap.  These were made of soft material in a conical shape with the apex bent over to the front. Attis was about to marry a king's daughter when, outraged, Cybele drove him mad. This led to Attis castrating and then killing himself under a palm tree, the scene depicted in this drawing. Attis can be seen brandishing his dagger aloft, ready to inflict the final blow.  His discarded cap can be seen on the ground to his right. Attis (French ‘Atys’) was a prominent figure in French artistic culture: there is a celebrated 1780 opera by Piccinni for the Paris Opera, which culminates with Attis’s suicide. Colin de Vermont’s drawing is free in its rendering with looser lines and forms than would be required from a drawing that was used to make a print. It is likely that this work was intended as a quick preliminary sketch encouraged by the qualities of the medium. As can be seen here, chalk is especially appropriate for rendering effects of mass and atmosphere. However, from the late Renaissance red chalk began to be used as a medium in its own right for finished drawings.

Study for Last Sleep of Arthur in Avalon
Located in London, GB
Graphite on paper Image size: 7 1/2 x 9 inches (19 x 23 cm) Carved gilt frame Literature Illustrated in Malcolm Bell's 'Sir Edward Burne-Jones, A Record and Review', London, 1899, p.127. Provenance Major Charles Sydney Goldman 1958 By descent to his Sons John and Margaret Monck (John Goldman Monck) 1958-1963 Commander Victor Robert Penryn Monck (Victor Robert Penryn Monk Goldman) 1958-1963 Christie's London (Christie, Manson and Woods) 1963, John Monck and Cmdr Penryn Monck sale 26 April 1963 part lot 71 Sir John Richardson, 2019 Burne-Jones decided that the folds in the drapery in this study were too complex for the final painting and fairly soon after he simplified the draperies. The work is a drapery study for the seated figures at the centre of Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones monumental The Sleep of Arthur in Avalon (Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico). The artist spent seventeen years working on the complex narrative, even moving his studio to a larger space to accommodate the canvas. Born as a commission from his patron George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle, to decorate a wall in his library at Naworth Castle, The Sleep of Arthur in Avalon was left unfinished in Burne-Jones’ studio upon his death. The work was bequeathed to a studio neighbour whose descendants sold it at auction in 1963, where it was purchased by Luis A. Ferré, politician and founder of the Museo de Arte de Ponce. To his friends and family, Burne-Jones was known for his 'unpainted masterpieces'. Indeed, from his youth he made swift sketches, such as this study, that appeared effortless in contrast to his carefully crafted paintings and allowed him to work out ideas and refine details. He also drew outside of the studio, and his contemporaries remarked at his uncanny ability to do so while fully engaged in other activities. The painter W. Graham...

Portrait of Fingal / Finn MacCool - A moving portrait of an Irish literary hero
Located in Middletown, NY
Black chalk and graphite on light weight cream wove paper, 16 1/8 x 11 1/4 inches, (410 x 286 mm), the full sheet. Signed, titled, and dated in sepia ink in the lower-center sheet area. With horizontal folds approximately 1-inch from the sheet edge at each of the four sheets. The drawing appears to have been folded at the sheet edges to fit into a frame. Finn mac Cumail (or mac Umaill), often anglicized Finn McCool or MacCool, is a hero in Irish mythology, as well as in later Scottish and Manx folklore. He is the leader of the Fianna bands of young roving hunter-warriors, as well as being a seer and poet. He is said to have a magic thumb that bestows him with great wisdom. He is often depicted hunting with his hounds Bran and Sceólang, and fighting with his spear and sword. Fionn MacCumhail was transformed into the character "Fingal" in James Macpherson's poem cycle Ossian (1760), which Macpherson claimed was translated out of discovered Ossianic poetry written in the Scottish Gaelic language. Fionn MacCumhail features heavily in modern Irish literature. Most notably he makes several appearances in James Joyce's Finnegans Wake...
