This artwork titled "La Danseuse Espagnol Rosita Segovia: c.1950. Is a pastel and black stone on paper by noted French artist Jean Target, 1910-1997. It is hand signed an titled at the lower left corner by the artist. The artwork size is 11.75 x 9.75 inches. it is in very good condition, the colors are fresh and bright. About the artist. Jean Target was born in France in 1910. From a very young age early on, he was impassioned by the two forms of art that would remain the focal point of his career for all his life: visual arts and performing arts. In the 30s and 40s, as a young man, Jean Target frequented the Parisian theaters and cabarets, just like his role model, the famous impressionist painter Toulouse Lautrec, did at the end of the 19th century. Jean became friends with many performers and captured many formal as well as candid depictions. He gained exclusive access and used this privilege to create art with unparalleled perspective as an insider to the seedy, dark, yet glamorous underworld of Parisian cabaret. He drew the dancers on-site, capturing the dancer’s movements in his immediately recognizable signature style. In the 40s and 50s, he continued his artistic career, gaining recognition among collectors in France and all over Europe. His work depicting the Parisian performing art scene captures the feeling and history of the the theater and golden age of cabaret in Paris. Jean Target continued to draw, paint and sculpt until his death in 1997. The work of Jean Target is held in collections and museums worldwide including the world renowned Victoria And Albert Museum in London. About the subject: Rosita Segovia 1926-2003 has successfully transformed an international performing career into an equally brilliant second life as a choreographer. Born in Barcelona, she began dancing professionally at the age of 12 with the prestigious Liceo de la Opera de Barcelona, becoming a principal bailarina there. In 1953, she became the partner of the world famous Spanish dancer Antonio, and held the title of principal bailarina estrella in his company until 1973-performing in the great theaters around the world under the aegis of Sol Hurok. Among her greatest triumphs were works by Leonid Massine: Capriccio Espanol, The Three Cornered Hat and El Amor Brujo. After retiring from the stage, Segovia began to create a huge body of work that is in demand on both sides of the Atlantic. She has developed a unique style, a new way of presenting Spanish dance. In the same way that classical ballet evolved under Balanchine, Spanish dance has taken a new direction under her extraordinary talent. She has accomplished many notable projects throughout her career, and has been recognized with many honors, from the Gold Medal from the Beaux Arts Academy in Spain in 1958, to the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1992.

Alexander Bercovitch was born in Kherson, Russia in 1891. In 1926 he moved to Montreal, Canada. He is known for a vibrant, expressionist painting style. His landscapes also show the strong influence of impressionism. His mediums are pastel, gouache, watercolour and oil. As a child he apprenticing in icon-painting with monks. He also studied at Jerusalem's Art School of Bezalel, the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, and the Bakst-Dobujiinsky school and Stiglitz Academy, both in St. Petersburg. He worked in Odessa and Moscow painting stage decorations, before moving to Turkestan to teach art. He was influenced by the German Symbolist Franz von Stuck, as well as David Burliuk, co-founder of the Russian Primitivist movement and Wassily Kandinsky. After moving to Montreal he worked in decorative painting and set design. In 1927 he participated in the annual Spring Show of the Art Association of Montreal, and in 1933 held his first solo exhibition.
