Jolanta Johnsson
Shadow of a Doubt

1993

About the Item

Jolanta Johnsson, experienced Polish artist, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, PhD of fine arts, university teacher. She currently lives in Sweden. This is how she writes about the drawing: Who among us has not experienced moments of doubt? This universal condition is an inherent part of our lives. In these moments, we find ourselves uncertain about something that once appeared certain and obvious. However, when doubt infiltrates a cherished relationship, it casts a profound shadow over both individuals involved. As days pass, this shadow of doubt gradually expands, enveloping the entire room and even settling upon the bed where they once lay in a tender embrace. Yet, doubt is as transient as its shadow, easily dispelled by a single gesture or decision. This artwork is not an abstraction artwork. It serves as an invitation to confront and conquer doubt. Although the deep darkness of the shadow holds the allure of mystery, we must not shy away from exploring it. Perhaps within its depths, we may discover guidance on how to unravel the answers to our uncertainties.

This is how she writes about the drawing: When it comes to purchasing a blanket, many of us are drawn to the timeless appeal of a plaid pattern, which is often present in abstract art. Have you ever wondered why this particular design is so popular? I must admit, I don't have the answer. However, picture this: two individuals lying on a checkered...

This is how she writes about the drawing: In my intimate drawings, I capture what is closest to me – the private moments that I would hardly want to reveal. And yet, I choose to share them with my audience. The motif of the odalisque, a reclining woman, has long been a popular subject in art. Throughout history, numerous artists have embraced this theme, and some of their paintings depicting reclining women have become iconic, shaping the course of art in their respective eras. Art historians have extensively written about the influence of these works. Notably, the odalisques created by the French painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, such as his renowned piece “La Grande Odalisque...
