About the Item

The present watercolor is an excellent example of Joseph Rosman's early style, presenting contemporary American life though a child-like, abstracted lens. In the image, a man, woman and child walks down a suburban sidewalk, presumably leaving their house on the far right. The way the woman holds her arm to the back of the man, who himself points forward, recalls Pieter Bruegel the Elder's allegorical painting 'The Blind Leading the Blind.' At the same time, however, these subjects acknowledge the Pop concerns of the 1960s by looking to contemporary life and symbols in a playful style. These together indicate an ambivalence to the subject of an American family and memories of childhood. 19.63 x 28.5 inches, artwork 25.25 x 33.63 inches, frame Signed and dated in pencil, lower right Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting and Conservation Clear glazing to inhibit fading; housed in a matte metal frame. Artwork and frame in overall excellent condition. Joseph Rozman (b. 1944, Milwaukee, WI) received his BFA and MFA from UW-Milwaukee by 1969, and would later become a Professor at Mount Mary College. His style is a spontaneous merging of ancient art with Modernist concerns: like Paul Klee and Adolph Gottlieb, his compositions are dominated by pictographs and symbols, drawing influence from Ancient Egyptian styles and prehistoric rock art. His approach to painting likewise falls in the legacy of Abstract Expressionism, with his free experimentation with varied materials and processes, and his delight in color and texture. Caring the credo of "Art is Fun" Rozman's playful gestures recur in his richly diverse works.
