About the Item
Born in New York, Julian Levi spent his early years in Philadelphia. He began his art studies art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Arthur B. Carles, Daniel Garber, and Henry McCarter. On graduation, Levi was awarded a scholarship which he used to travel to Italy and Paris. During his stay in Europe, which lasted five years, from 1920 to 1925, Levi was influenced by Cubism. He was especially drawn to the art of Juan Gris, adopting the gentle color harmonies and precise linear treatments of forms found in Gris's works. In 1924, Levi participated in an important show of Philadelphia modern artists which included works by Charles Demuth, Hugh Breckinridge, Franklin Watkins, and his former teachers Carles and McCarter. A year later, he returned to Philadelphia, but found the art climate unreceptive to new trends. As Levi stated later, "modern artists were scandalous pariahs and much of our energy at that time was devoted to justifying our existence." (1)
In 1932, Levi moved to New York, residing in Greenwich Village on Twelfth Street. He became the director of the art workshop at the New School for Social Research, and he also participated in projects organized by the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration. During the years that followed, Levi contributed to many museum exhibitions, sending works to annuals at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and others. His first one-man show was held at the Downtown Gallery in New York in 1940. Later in his career, he taught at the Art Students League and contributed frequently to the Magazine of Art. He was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1959, and ten years later, he became vice-president of this organization. Known as a romantic painter, Levi created semi-abstract images of nature which feature subtle, delicate colors and decorative yet disciplined arrangements. He maintained a preference for figurative subject matter even in an era in which non-objective painting dominated the art world.
Levi's work is included in many important private and public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; the Art Institute of Chicago; the New Britain Museum of American Art; the Newark Museum; the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, University of Nebraska, Lincoln; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and many others.

Biography from Butler Institute of American Art
Emil Ganso
1885-1941
Ganso was born in Germany in 1895. At age 14, he apprenticed to a baker and then worked his way to America when he was 17. He worked in bakeries in Scranton, Pennsylvania; and Cincinnati and Akron, Ohio. By 1916, Ganso was out of a job, and living the life of a bohemian in New York City, sometimes on less than 30 cents a week.
In 1921, Ganso painted on a realistic nude on a bedsheet and was forced by the police to remove it from an exhibition. The bedsheet with the painting was later stolen. He soon had a job baking again at $140 a month, and with time to spare for painting and study. Ganso quit baking in 1925 when a New York dealer game him financial backing of $50 a week. Ganso has prospered from his art ever since.
His work is in over 15 American museums, and the Print Club of Cleveland awarded him a $500 purchase prize for a wood engraving. A versatile artist, he paints a variety of subjects.

By Norman Laliberté
Located in Los Angeles, CA
American/Canadian printmaker, painter, sculptor, author, and educator Norman Laliberte was born in Worcester, Massachussets, in 1925, to French Canadian parents. He was raised in Montreal, Canada, where he attended l'Ecole du Musee des beaux-arts. After graduation in 1948 he returned to the U.S. to continue his studies at the Institute of Design (BS, 1951) and the Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago (MS in art education, 1956). Additional courses took place at Worcester Museum and the Cranbrook Academy in Michigan, to which he was granted a painting scholarship. He then began an extensive exhibiting career in conjunction with his work as a teacher. He began teaching in 1959, first at Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri from 1959 to 1960. This was followed by positions at St. Mary's College at Notre Dame Univerity, Indiana (1960 - '65); Rhode Island School of Design (1965 - '66); Newton College, Massachusetts (1967); and RISD once again from 1976 - 1977. Additionally, he was a guest lecturer and workshop leader at a variety of schools in both the U.S. and Canada. He received an honorary doctorate from both Notre Dame and McGill University. During his time as a teacher he continued to show in group and solo exhibitions;nhis first solo show took place at the Waddington Galleries in Montreal in 1965.A major feature of Laliberte's early output was banners executed in fabric, inpired by a trip he took to the Italian city of Siena during their summer festivals. This would prove to be a key turn in his career, as he was commissioned to work a consultant at the 1964 New York World's Fair, creating a structure made of 88 banners to represent stained glass walls for the Vatican Pavilion; this job earned him international recognition as both an artist and a designer. His most recent commission was eighteen large panels for the International Terminal at the Logan Airport in Boston.
