About the Item

Kim Dorland (b. 1974) is among the most accomplished and collected Canadian artists of his generation. He is celebrated for his inimitable painting style, with its thick impasto and hyper-real palette. The artist is credited with reinvigorating the (Canadian) landscape genre by depicting dense woodlands and suburban parks, populated with spooky figures or brooding teenagers with a visceral and raw intensity. His evocative and distinctive outdoor scenes, brilliantly heightened with elements of neon or acidic colors have played a central role in his otherworldly exploration of childhood, memory, and nostalgia. Dorland's work is instantly recognizable for his electric palette of neon hues, executed with rich brushstrokes that are simultaneously frenetic and meticulously calculated. His incredibly tactile technique brings to life his phantasmagoric scapes, placing the viewer in a realm that hovers between dream and reality. This untitled work on paper from 2015 likely served as a study for a larger painting. In this piece, the artist depicts a group of men trailing through a lush forest, their backs to the viewer, heightening a sense of mystery and anonymity that pervades the scene. Rendered in a florescent duotone palette of aqua and coral, the composition resembles infrared imaging, positioning the viewer as a voyeur. Are the subjects being surveilled? Despite his uncharacteristically pared-back approach, this work defies convention, encapsulating the viewer while offering subtle details that invite further contemplation. Dorland's version of contemporary expressionism is truly unrivaled. Dorland was named Artist of the Year by the Globe and Mail in 2013. His work is featured in prestigious collections across the globe including the Contemporary Art Foundation (Japan), Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, to name a few. 'Red, ' by XVALA, Acrylic, Oil Stick and Spray Paint on Canvas Painting
By XVALA
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
This large scale 76" x 90" mixed media canvas painting by XVALA features a Basquiat-style large red creature predominantly placed on the canvas against a light blue background. Other colors include varying blues, golds and black. Acrylic paint, spray paint and oil stick were used on a linen canvas. XVALA's art illuminates the hidden fallout spawned from our high tech Internet age. His 'Fear Google' campaign exposed the decay of privacy and 'No Delete' used hacked nude celebrity photos to highlight loss of control over personal information. The artist has worked with trash from the homes of Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and others, as well as dirt from the graves of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. The dirt appears in the New World Order collection as part of a pyramidal, 3D printed, living ant farm...
