Lewis Suzuki
Lewis Suzuki was born in Los Angeles, California of Japanese descent. As a boy of nine, Suzuki's father died (1929), and his mother returned to Japan with her six children. There, Suzuki excelled in the art programs in his primary school, attended Kawabata Art Academy in Tokyo, and began exploring the possibility of studying art in the U.S. In 1939, Suzuki moved back to Los Angeles, completed high school and took classes at Otis Art Institute, In 1941, Suzuki moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked at the Japanese Embassy primarily as a “tea boy” and took classes at Corcoran School of Art. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, all embassy officials were to return to Japan, but Suzuki wished to remain in the U.S. He joined the U.S. Army and taught Japanese at the Military Intelligence Service Language School in Minnesota. After the war, he moved to New York, where he studied at the Art Students League and earned a living as a cabinet-maker. Since the 1950's he resided in Berkeley, California and painted around the Bay Area. There, he specialized in city scenes, rural scenes, seascapes and floral still lifes, done with the wet-into-wet watercolor painting style. Suzuki once said, “I feel that art has a place in enriching the life of humanity … Through my art, I try to strengthen that part of culture. And I feel that the arts should project the future of human society. To me, it cannot be non-objective or abstract in that sense.” He created a graphic work, “No More Hiroshimas,” and other peace posters for the American Friends Service Committee. Suzuki was a member of the politically active Graphic Arts Workshop from 1953 to 1963. Suzuki’s bold and imaginative use of color won him numerous awards, including two at the Society of Western Artists show at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. He served on the Berkeley Art Commission and was recognized by the City of Berkeley in 2010. Until recently, he continued to work at his studio on Grant Street in Berkeley, participating in such events as East Bay Open Studios and Berkeley Artisans Holiday Open Studios. His work is well exhibited, listed, and collected.

Alice Rose[1] Provensen (née Twitchell; August 14, 1918[2] – April 23, 2018[3]) and Martin Provensen (July 10, 1916 – March 27, 1987) were an American couple who illustrated more than 40 children's books together, 19 of which they also wrote and edited.[4] According to Alice, "we were a true collaboration. Martin and I really were one artist."[4]
Biographies
Their early lives were similar. Both were born in Chicago and moved to California when they were twelve.[5] Both received scholarships to the Art Institute of Chicago, and both attended the University of California, though at separate campuses. After college, Alice went to work with Walter Lantz Studio, the creators of Woody Woodpecker, and Martin took work with the Walt Disney Studio, where he collaborated on Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Dumbo.
The pair met in 1943 when Martin, working as a creator of training films for the American military, was assigned to the Walter Lantz Studio. They were married in 1944 and settled in Washington, D.C., where they worked on war-related projects. After the war, they moved to New York City where a friend helped them get their first job, illustrating The Fireside Book of Folk Songs.[5] They illustrated several Little Golden Books including The Color Kittens by Margaret Wise Brown (1949). In 1952, Tony the Tiger, designed by Martin, debuted as a Kellogg's mascot.

Vielle Femme en Petite Cape

7-5/8" x 4-3/4" art

Jacques Villon (French, 1875 - 1963) French painter, printmaker and illustrator. The oldest of three brothers who became major 20th-century artists, including Raymond Duchamp-Villon and Marcel Duchamp, he learnt engraving at the age of 16 from his maternal grandfather, Emile-Frédéric Nicolle (1830-94), a ship-broker who was also a much appreciated amateur artist. In January 1894, having completed his studies at the Lycée Corneille in Rouen, he was sent to study at the Faculty of Law of the University of Paris, but within a year he was devoting most of his time to art, already contributing lithographs to Parisian illustrated newspapers such as Assiette au beurre. At this time he chose his pseudonym: Jack (subsequently Jacques) in homage to Alphonse Daudet’s novel Jack (1876) and Villon in appreciation of the 15th-century French poet François Villon...

The Gazebo
By Jake Lee
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "The Gazebo" 1989 is a watercolor by noted Chinese/American artist Jake Lee, 1915-1991 It is signed and dated at the middle right corner by the artist. The image size is 14 x 17 inches, framed is 22.75 x 25.5 inches. It is custom framed in a wooden gold frame, with gold color spacer and fabric matting. it is in excellent condition.
About the artist.
Jake Lee is emerging as the visual chronicler of the Chinese American past, especially the daily life in San Francisco Chinatown. No other artist, of any background, has presented that history as richly and as evocatively as Lee did in his many, striking compositions. Completed over a lifetime of work, Lee's paintings of historical sites, moments, and experiences give us an artistic vision.
For much of his life, Lee was known primarily as a commercial artist who completed arresting illustrations for travel magazines, greeting cards, and book jackets. He was an art teacher, with many students who learned the use of water-soluble pigments to depict the many landscapes of mid-20th century California. Less well-known were his representations of the many places historically linked to the Chinese of the state and the West. To this day, few in America know about Chinese work in the fisheries, in the early wine industry, in 19th century urban industry, and in the colorful cultural life of San Francisco in the years before the Great Earthquake. At a time when most Americans thought Chinese Americans had just been laundrymen, houseboys, or Charlie Chan, characters they saw on television.
As a visual historian, he connected us with the past, but foremost he was an artist. He presented appealing scenes for the visitor to San Francisco who wanted a visual memento. He mastered Western...
