About the Item
María Conejo’s proposal consists of a series of oil paintings and ink drawings that offer a profound and intimate exploration of the emotions within us. The artworks depict an anatomical landscape, where each organ symbolizes a dwelling for small goddesses engaging in play, dance, and meditation. Through each brushstroke, the artist captures a connection to oneself, a rediscovery of the body, its sensations, pleasures, and pains. By immersing ourselves in María’s journey, we descend into the inner landscapes of our emotions. Furthermore, the erotic anatomy presents pulsating organs transformed into sanctuaries of love, sexuality, and desire. Drawing inspiration from ancient medical texts, alchemical treatises, astrological imagery, and spiritual symbols, María Conejo invites us to rediscover the sacredness of the physical body. In the past, the body was not just seen as a perfect machine of nature. Rediscovering the body means feeling it, listening to it, making it our own, transforming it, and reinventing it. Two colossal guardians represent the connection between the body and nature, holding wisdom passed down through the ages by healers, magicians, sorceresses, and herbalists. These women took care of the secrets of medicinal plants, the ability to recognize health or illness through bodily expressions, knowledge of the nutritional powers of food, and the magic of words, especially words of love. Evoking the skills of magician artists, María Conejo uses lines, colors, and lights to transmute emotions. From darkness comes light, chaos gives birth to the cosmos, and formlessness gives rise to art.
Visual artist and designer, María Conejo studied in the School of Fine Arts and Design. Her creative practice spans across various areas such as drawing, pain- ting, illustration, design, large-scale murals, ceramics, and tattoos, and her artistic practice portrays the relationship with her own body and is fueled by continuous research on the body, sexuality, and the iconography that has been generated throu- ghout history to represent and address these themes. Twice awarded the national Young Creators grant, a program led by the Ministry of Culture, in 2014 and 2016 in the Print category. María Conejo is the co-founder
and art director of Pussypedia.net, a sexual education website that received first
place in the 10th National Design Biennial in Mexico and a Webby award in 2020.
She is the illustrator of Pussypedia, a Comprehensive Guide, published in 2021
in New York by Hachette Books. She is also the art director and illustrator of the
animated short film “Llueve” which, among several awards, was part of the official
selection at the 61st Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022.
