This artwork c.1950 is a watercolor by noted Oregon artist Maude Walling Wanker ( American, 1882-1970) It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. The artwork size is 16.25 x 21.25 inches, framed size is 25 x 29 inches. Framed in a dark wood frame, with gold color bevel. The artwork is in excellent condition, the frame has some minor scratches. About the artist. Maude Walling Wanker (1882-1970) was born on October 22, 1882 in Lake Oswego, Oregon. She studied art at the Museum Art School with Clara Jane Stephens, at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1936 with John Bernard Hinshaw, at the University of Oregon with Steinhof, and in Vienna. She specialized in watercolors and oils. Maude Wanker grew up in the Tualatin Valley, where she began she began sketching as a child. After her marriage in 1901 and the birth of a child, she began attending the Museum Art School on an irregular basis. In 1939 she was one of the three artists chosen to represent Oregon at the fourth National Exhibition of American Art, held in New York's Rockefeller Center. Wanker moved to the Oregon Coast and devoted much of her organizational skills to the creation of the Lincoln County Art Association in 1941 and the Lincoln Art Center in 1942. Between 1930 and 1940 Wanker painted almost one hundred depictions of Oregon's historical sites, traveling throughout the state to record them before they disappeared. These included the Old Methodist Church, the Old Blockhouse at the Dalles, and paintings of the Skidmore Fountain in Summer and Winter, which are in the Oregon Historical Society collection. Wanker, who taught throughout her career, was a prolific painter. She exhibited her oils and watercolors in twenty states, had one-person shows in ten states and was awarded over four hundred prizes. She was member of the American Artists Professional League, the Lincoln County Art Association, the Oregon Society of Artists, the Art Guild, the Oregon Amateur Watercolor Society, the Watercolor Society of Oregon, and the Skidmore Fountain Art Center Inc. She exhibited at the Oregon Society of Artists, the Seattle Art Museum, the Portland Art Museum, the Arts Guild, the American Artists Professional League (1933-1937, 1939, 1953), the Meier and Frank Co., the National Exhibition of American Art, the Lake Oswego Country Club, retrospective, the Multnomah County Fair, the Lincoln County Art Center (1942, 1948, 1959), the Elfstrom Gallery, the Master Watercolor Society of Oregon 1958, the Attic Club, the Oregon Centennial 1959, the Oregon Historical Society 1990, and the Clatsop County Historical Society 1994. Her work is represented in some of the most prestigious public and private collections, including, the Oregon Historical Society, the Capitol Collection, Salem, Oregon, the La Grande Library, and the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Willamette University. Maude Walling Wanker died in Lincoln City, Oregon in October of 1970.

About the artist: A native of Syracuse, John E. De Tore was born in 1902. DeTore enjoyed painting continuously since the age of 8. Although he became an engineer with the Niagara Mohawk Power corporation he carried on elective training in the required branches of art. Scottish artist Robert Carrick (1829-1904) is renowned for his landscape and figurative paintings in oil and watercolor. This painting features detailed drawings of figures in the foreground with wagon, and the town and scenery in the background, painted over in watercolor in rich raw umber and red-brown tones in the foreground and blue green tones in the background. Carrick showed promise at a young age, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy age 16. He was a member of the Royal Institute. This two-toned watercolor work has detailed figures, wagon with hay in the forefront above a view of Dunoon town near Glasgow as it was long ago. Signed by the artist, lower left with an inscription that reads: 'View of Dunoon, Argyllshire drawn by Robert Carrick, Glasgow, for David Allan'. Verso includes a copy of the same inscription. Saltire Gallerie replaced the cracked and dirty plain glass with art glass and added an acid-free paper behind the work. While doing this work we found an art giclee, included with the painting. Presented in a patterned wooden frame with art glass. Dunoon was a thriving town on the river at the time of this work, and later became part of Glasgow.
