Legend says Deianira was Hercules' wife.
Heracles and Deianira encountered the centaur Nessus, who served as a ferryman at the Evenus River. Nessus attempted to assault Deianira, and Heracles swiftly shot him with an arrow, saving her.
Centuar Nessus is pictured in the lower part of the scene.
The story of Deianira and Hercules became the subject of one of Sophocles’ tragic plays, titled “Trachiniae” (The Women of Trachis). Like many Greek tragedies, it explored the consequences when gods and mortals interacted.
These three drawings from the Neo Mythology series exhibit a dynamic fusion of classical themes with expressive, contemporary mark-making.
