Disegno matita su carta, 45 x 68 cm; con cornice dorata 72 x 94 cm.
La scena si svolge sulla costa, nel punto in cui il mare tempestoso lambisce la terraferma, che si presenta rocciosa e dalla natura selvaggia. La composizione è dominata da una diafana figura femminile, vestita alla greca e con un diadema sulla testa, in una posa che tradisce un certo riserbo misto a sorpresa; di fronte stanno due uomini-anch’essi abbigliati all’antica, uno più adulto in piedi e uno più giovane in ginocchio-che si rivolgono alla fanciulla con timore. Il disegno racconta il momento in cui Telemaco, figlio di Odisseo, e la dea Atena, sotto le spoglie di Mentore, dopo un naufragio, incontrano la divinità marina Calipso sulla sua isola, Ogigia, mentre essa ancora piangeva la partenza dell’astuto eroe. L’episodio qui descritto è una rivisitazione sul tema della Telemachia, ovvero i primi quattro capitoli dell’Odissea, riferibile a Les Aventures de Télémaque del monaco francese François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon, pubblicato nel 16991. Il romanzo riscosse un grande successo sin da subito, al punto che vari artisti vi si sono ispirati, fra i quali si menzionano, in ordine cronologico, Nicholas Vleughels, Angelica Kauffman, Thomas Stothard, Edward Francis Burney.
Il disegno qui studiato è relativo al dipinto olio su tavola presente al Glasgow Museums Resource Centre, proveniente dalla collezione del consigliere, magistrato e collezionista d’arte scozzese Archibald McLellan, che reca la firma Richard Westall e la data 18032; quest’ultimo è accompagnato da un pendant a tema mitologico rappresentante il momento successivo, con Telemaco e Mentore accolti da Calipso nel suo pergolato. Dal soggetto sono state tratte varie incisioni, tra cui quelle presenti al British Museum del 1810 ad opera di Edward Scriven3.
Richard Westall fu un importante e proficuo pittore neoclassico inglese, ritenuto “un’eccezionale artista del pittoresco”, famoso per essere stato l’insegnante di disegno della regina Vittoria. Lasciò la contea di Nortfolk nel 1772 per trasferirsi a Londra dove iniziò l’apprendistato artistico fino ad iscriversi, nel 1785, alla Royal Academy della quale diventò un associato alla fine del XVIII secolo. Grande amico di Lord Byron, che di lui disse che “il pennello aveva superato la poesia”, e di Thomas Lawrence, con il, quale condivise la medesima casa al numero 57 di Greek Street in Soho. Lavorò sia alla Shakespeare Gallery di John Boydel sia fu collaboratore di Johann Heinrich Füssli alla Milton Gallery. Si fece un’ottima fama anche come illustratore di libri e come acquarellista.
