Note: Hallowell was a graduate of the Phillips Academy and Harvard University. He was President of the Harvard Lampoon and a founder of the new Republic Magazine along with Walter Lipmann and Herbert Croly. He also served as the Assistant Director of the Federal Arts Project in 1935-6. As an artist his career was equally successful. In the decade of 1924-34 he exhibited at Bernheim-Jeune, Paris along with Montross Gallery, Feragil Gallery, MacBeth Gallery and Knoedler Gallery. Works were acquired by the Phillips Collection, Cleveland Museum of art, Brooklyn Museum, Baltimore Museum, Harvard University, Metropolitan Museum and Museum of Fine Arts-Boston.

Robert Hallowell (1886-1939) was highly regarded as an artist exhibiting at the finest galleries and museums in American and France in the 1920’s and 1930’s. His other professional life included graduating from Phillips Academy, Andover and Harvard University. While at Harvard he was president of the Harvard Lampoon (1909-1910) and was a founding member of the now famous New Republic Magazine with Walter Lippman and Herbert Croly. Robert worked there as business manager and publisher from 1914 to 1925, when he left to concentrate on his artistic creativity. Hallowell was an official for the Treasury Department during World War One. His final Government posting was as Assistant Director of the Federal Arts Project in 1935-36. How can someone of such cultural involvement have fallen to total obscurity today?
All the works came from Mildred Thaler Cohen (1921-2012), a noted New York collector and gallerist. Along with her first husband, they started collecting American paintings in the 1950’s when they were out of public favor. Upon the death of her husband, she opened the Marbella Gallery on 72nd Street in Manhattan establishing the reputation of being a connoisseur/dealer. The offerings were displayed in her gallery and home salon style.. When and how the Thaler’s acquired the works remain a mystery.
On my first viewing of Hallowell’s artwork, I was taken with his application of paint (oil and especially watercolor) and his color harmonies and delicate shading. The limited scholarship on the artist tells us he was self-taught. All the more impressive. Today, they stand the test of time and should be regarded for their beauty and for the historic acclaim they achieved in the 1920’s and 30’s.

The painting that this drawing is related to, is illustrated in Lee & Krause, William McGregor Paxton, 1869-1941, Plate 32, text on page 132. The painting was formerly in the collection of Victor Spark and the Honorable Paul Buchanan. It is currently in a Texas Collection.

William McGregor Paxton (June 22, 1869 – 1941) was an American painter and instructor who embraced the Boston School paradigm and was a co-founder of The Guild of Boston Artists. He taught briefly while a student at Cowles Art School, where he met his wife Elizabeth Okie Paxton, and at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston. Paxton is known for his portraits, including those of two presidents—Grover Cleveland and Calvin Coolidge—and interior scenes with women, including his wife. His works are in many museums in the United States.
Early life
He was born on June 22, 1869, in Baltimore to James and Rose Doherty Paxton. William's father moved the Paxton family and established a catering business in Newton Corner, Massachusetts, in the mid-1870s.

Biography
Robert Henri was born Robert Henry Cozad in Cincinnati, Ohio, on June 24, 1865, the son of a professional gambler and real estate developer. The family lived in Nebraska and Colorado, but fled east when the father shot and killed a rancher over a land dispute and was indicted for manslaughter. They changed their last name because of the ensuing scandal and eventually settled in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the early 1880s.
