The drawing, India ink on paper, falls within the studies of antiquity popular in the Academies from the 18th century onward, and refers to the frieze of an ancient sarcophagus.
Al centro si trova un clipeo con due figure abbracciate, i defunti, probabilmente un uomo e una donna. Ai lati si trovano quattro putti che, per gli attributi, rimandano alle quattro stagioni. Da notare quello esterno a destra, l'allegoria dell'inverno, il cui stile rimanda alla divinità frigia Attis. Insieme a loro si trovano degli animali, ovini e un cinghiale, e sotto al clipeo una scena di vendemmia, con la raccolta dell'uva che viene poi schiacciata sotto i piedi per fare il vino.
Sebbene i rimandi a molti sarcofagi esistenti siano forti (per esempio quelli di Villa Carpegna, del Louvre, di Cagliari, di Dumbarton Oaks) ad ora non è possibile stabilire se studiato dal vivo o se sia una creazione sul tema originale dell'artista.
