Letter to artist (on verso) written by and signed: W. Glackens
The text written on verso is as follows:
My Dear Serviere [sic]
The picture on the other side will explain why I was not at the train at 12 noon. I arrived a few minutes after you left. Lawson asked me to criticize his class for him that morning. It took longer than he said it would. Please accept this picture as an apology in both senses.
Yours regretfully,
W. Glackens

In Criticizing Ernest Lawson’s Art Class, there is the dark palette, the vigorous strokes of the pencil and the quick dabs of the watercolor; all of these add to the sense of action and immediacy. Glackens’ wit is quite evident in this drawing. The artist stands gesturing before an easel holding a nude study (the model appears in the background), and he depicts himself as a very short and somewhat rotund man. The pensive female student whose work he is critiquing hovers over him, her neck extended as she looks down upon him. The scene has the feeling that the roles have been reversed—there is something childlike, almost naive in Glackens’ facial features; he seems the student, while the woman, with her stern concentration, appears to be the instructor. Perhaps this is Glackens’ feeling about himself for having missed an appointment (see the letter verso), but it’s more likely that this is a jab at the academic critics of his day, those of the National Academy who refused his work and the work of his contemporaries in the same year that Criticizing Ernest Lawson’s Art Class was created.

Born in Paris to parents who were American artists, Reginald Marsh became an adept illustrator at an early age. His family returned to the United States in 1900. Upon graduating from Yale University, Marsh moved to New York and in 1922 took a job as an illustrator at the New York Daily News. For the paper he provided cartoons of vaudeville and burlesque shows. In 1925 Marsh went to work for a new magazine -- The New Yorker -- as one of its original cartoonists. That same year he married Betty Burroughs, daughter of the paintings curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Later that year they traveled to Europe where Marsh discovered the work of the old masters at the Louvre in Paris and British museums. With a sketchbook always on hand, he wandered the streets of Europe and began depicting bums or what he called figures of failure. Upon the couple’s return, Marsh, now with a serious interest in pursuing art, enrolled at the Art Students League where he studied under George Luks, John Sloan, and Kenneth Hayes Miller. This work, Monseigneur News Theatre, is accompanied by a letter from Marsh Scholar Professor Norman Sasowsky, University of Delaware...

H. M. Bateman was noted for his "The Man Who..." series of cartoons, featuring comically exaggerated reactions to minor and usually upper-class social gaffes, such as "The Man Who Lit His Cigar Before the Loyal Toast", "The Man Who Threw a Snowball at St. Moritz" and "The Boy Who Breathed on the Glass at the British Museum."
He was born in the small village of Sutton Forest in New South Wales, Australia. His parents were Henry Charles Bateman and Rose Mayo. His father had left England for Australia in 1878 at the age of 21 to seek his fortune, then returned to England briefly in 1885 before going back with an English wife. Soon after Henry was born, his strong-willed mother insisted that they return to London 'and civilisation'. He had one sister, Phyllis, three years younger. Henry remained in England for the remainder of his life except for one disappointing visit to his birthplace.[citation needed]
Henry was always drawing from an early age, consistently producing funny drawings...
