About the Item

Pencil, wax crayon, watercolour wash on paper Signed and dated in pen and ink lower right: Moore / 50 Henry Moore was one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century, but in addition to sculpting, he also devoted his interest and his energy to drawing, particularly in and around the 1940s. His graphic work includes not only preparatory sketches for his sculptures but also sketches and designs for prints on fabric and cloth, another area of special interest for him, as we can see from the three albums of sketches which he produced in 1943 (thirty of these designs had been printed on fabric by well-known textile manufacturer Zika Ascher). In his designs for textiles, the sculptor transferred onto fabric the same forms that characterised his sculptural output, though frequently enriching them with strong, luminous colours. The most recent catalogue devoted to Henry Moore's designs for textiles was published by Anita Feldman in 2008. It is interesting to note that in the part of the book devoted to designs for textiles entitled Zigzag, Feldman begins by stating that: "Although there is no known extant drawing for Zigzag, Moore’s vibrant orange-red design for the textile was reproduced on the cover of the Institute of Contemporary Arts catalogue Painting into Textiles. This Catalogue was distributed as an insert in the 1953 n. 11 issue of The Ambassador: The British Export Magazine for Textiles and Fashions […]" (Anita Feldman, 2008, p. 143). The drawing whose absence Feldman laments is precisely the Design for Textile (Zigzag) under discussion in this paper. In the absence of the original drawing to set alongside her entry, Feldman was forced to reproduce the cover of the 1953 catalogue in which Zigzag had been published. Zigzag's geometricality is reminiscent of the tribal forms harking back to native and aboriginal cultures in which Moore had taken such an interest during the formative years of his artistic career. The motifs of the design (which is subdivided into six sections, each containing a different geometrical module) are produced in such a way as to highlight the imperfections typical of hand-made goods. As Feldman points out, thanks to the simplicity of the modules this design lent itself to being printed by the silk-screen process rather than by hand. Zigzag had been used in the 1950s for David Whitehead's famous fabrics, and it was also particularly appreciated by the Moores themselves. In fact the sculptor and his wife Irina decided to have Zigzag printed for them on fabric in grey-brown, black, rust and white for the curtains and bedspreads in their home (see Anita Feldman, 2008, pp. 142–5).
