About the Item

It was on the streets of Lisbon, through the observation of popular life and manual work, that Jorge Barradas completed his training, after having left an incomplete technical course at the Machado de Castro School and the course at the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes. In 1911 he was introduced to the Lisbon artistic environment by the director of the publication A Sátira, and the following year he debuted at the 1st Exhibition of the Portuguese Humorists Group. In 1915, he exhibited at the 1st Exhibition of Humorists and Modernists, in Porto. The drawings from this period already reveal a strong propensity to observe the social environment. In the 10's and 20's he collaborated with publications such as O Século Cómico, Portuguese Illustration, Magazine Bertrand, ABC or Illustration. In August 1919 he founded, together with the writer Henrique Roldão, the humorous newspaper O Riso da Vitória, and in 1921 he became artistic director of ABC a Rir. In 1920 he held a solo exhibition at the Clube Naval, which received positive reactions from critics. His work is inhabited by typical characters from the alfacinha life, where the beggar, the drunkard, the new rich, the ardina, the seamstresses stand out. The woman is also a favorite figure, be it of a popular type, or a regular at the Bristol Club, represented with originality and modernity. In 1930 he received the Malhoa award for the table designed for the decoration of the café A Brasileira do Chiado. That year he travels through the Portuguese colonies of Africa, resulting in works such as Tropical Landscape (1931). From that decade onwards, he developed decoration works and became increasingly interested in tiles and ceramics. Barradas also contributed to the renewal of the scenic taste in popular shows, in partnership with Leitão de Barros, and left an extensive collection of lithographs on popular subjects.
