About the Item

Abraham Walkowitz (1878–1965) A Sailing Ship at the Port, 1909 Watercolor on cardboard Signed lower right 'A. Walkowitz', in pencil '1909' Dimensions: 33.5 x 56 cm Born: Tyumen, Russia (then part of the Russian Empire) Emigrated to the U.S.: As a child, settled in New York City Studied: National Academy of Design (New York), Académie Julian (Paris) 1. Pioneer of American Modernism Walkowitz was among the first American artists to embrace European modernist movements, incorporating styles like Fauvism, Cubism, and Futurism into his work after studying in Paris around 1906. He brought these avant-garde ideas to the U.S. ahead of the 1913 Armory Show, helping pave the way for American modernism. 2. Part of Stieglitz's Inner Circle He was closely associated with Alfred Stieglitz and the legendary 291 Gallery, where he exhibited alongside early American modernists like Georgia O’Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, and Arthur Dove. This positioned him at the heart of America’s emerging modern art scene. 3. Famous for Isadora Duncan Drawings Walkowitz is perhaps best known for his hundreds of spontaneous, lyrical drawings of dancer Isadora Duncan, capturing movement and emotion in minimalist lines. These works were deeply modern in their simplicity and expressive abstraction, long before Abstract Expressionism. 4. Lyrical Abstraction and Line Work Walkowitz had a distinctive style: a balance between figuration and abstraction, often using economy of line, rhythmic movement, and flattened forms to depict both cityscapes and the human body with an emotional and poetic quality. 6. Legacy Though he never achieved the fame of some of his contemporaries, Walkowitz is now recognized as a bridge figure—connecting European modernism with early 20th-century American art, and contributing meaningfully to the evolution of abstract and expressive visual language in the U.S.

Sheroanawë Hakihiiwë (1971) No Ohiri Pre Ai (No Tenian Comida), 2013 Watercolor on handmade paper, 50 x 67 cm, signed in the bottom left Comes with certificate of authenticity. Born in a small Yanomami Indigenous community in the Venezuelan Amazon, Hakihiiwe began making paper from natural fibres in the 1990s, a skill he learned by studying with the Mexican artist Laura Anderson Barbata. The artist’s work now consists primarily of drawings and paintings on handmade paper. He draws from his ancestral knowledge of the signs and symbols of Yanomami culture, and their decorative application in basketry and body painting for ritual ceremonies. His work forms a rapidly growing visual lexicon, or library, of Yanomami visual culture. Hakihiiwe’s drawings and paintings reveal his beliefs, rites and traditions as well as his close relationship to the natural world. Hakihiiwe was selected for The Milk of Dreams, the main exhibition at the LIX Venice Biennale in 2022, curated by Cecilia Alemani. Other recent group shows that the artist has participated in include: Siamo Foresta, Triennale di Milano, Italy (2023); Chosen Memories: Contemporary Latin American Art from the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros...
