Arthur B. Davies (1862-1928)
Born in Utica, New York, Arthur Davies gained a reputation for ethereal figure paintings, ones that expressed lightness and mysticism. He was also a principal organizer of the 1913 Armory Show that revolutionized American art by introducing modernism to the viewing public.
He attended the Chicago Academy of Design and from 1879 to 1882, traveled in the West, to Colorado and Mexico City where he worked as a drafting civil engineer. He briefly attended the Chicago Art Institute, and in 1885 moved to New York City where he studied at the Art Students League and Gotham Art Students League. He supported himself as a billboard painter, engineering draftsman, and magazine illustrator.
In 1893, he made the first of many trips to Europe, visiting Holland, Paris, and London. He particularly studied the Dutch realist painters, the Maris brothers. He settled in Congers, New York and from there traveled extensively throughout the United States.
He developed a style that combined the visionary with Symbolism with elements of Tonalism, Art Nouveau, and Cubism and became increasingly interested in expressing a feeling of lightness in figural compositions.
He also did printmaking, having begun in the 1880s and producing some two-hundred graphic works between 1916 and his death in 1928.

Arthur B. Davies
Born in Utica, NY in 1962, Arthur Davies sold his first sculpture — a small, detailed sailboat carved with a pocketknife — at the age of 12 for $25. After the 1913 Armory Show, Davies began to regularly cast small bronze sculptures and reliefs from wood carvings, and later from clay. These pieces were carved from life on occasion but more often from sketches. As Bennard B. Perlman notes in The Lives, Loves, and Art of Arthur B. Davies (1999), "experimentation in a three-dimensional medium was akin to his use of abstraction in painting, except that color was eliminated, allowing him to concentrate on the angular break up of shapes without the added complexity of considering hue, value, and intensity." Davies exhibited internationally, saw his work enter major public and private collections, and at the time of his death, the Metropolitan Museum of Art organized a large memorial exhibition. Today Davies’ artworks can be found in numerous public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.; Art Institute of Chicago; National Gallery of Art; Philadelphia Museum of Art; and Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

Pedro Joseph de Lemos (25 May 1882 – 5 December 1954) was an American painter, printmaker, architect, illustrator, writer, lecturer, museum director and art educator in the San Francisco Bay Area. Prior to about 1930 he used the simpler name Pedro Lemos or Pedro J. Lemos; between 1931 and 1933 he changed the family name to de Lemos, believing that he was related to the Count de Lemos (1576–1622), patron of Miguel de Cervantes. Much of his work was influenced by traditional Japanese woodblock printing and the Arts and Crafts Movement. He became prominent in the field of art education, and he designed several unusual buildings in Palo Alto and Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.....
In 1911 he began teaching decorative design at the San Francisco Institute of Art.[8] In late 1912 he was one of the founders the California Society of Etchers, and the following year he started offering the Institute's first classes in printmaking. In his lifetime, John Francis Murphy (1853-1921) was known as “the American Corot.” He was renowned for his small, intimate views of nature, especially barren fields and farms, bare trees, and lonely marshland. More than a century later, the power of Murphy’s landscapes has not waned. One contemporary critic wrote, “It was Murphy’s unique accomplishment to achieve an absolute realism without a loss of that mystic, indefinable quality which transfigures realism.”
John Francis Murphy was born at Oswego, NY in 1853 but his family moved to Chicago in 1868 where he worked painting theater sets. Murphy was basically a self-taught artist; his only formal training was a few weeks of instruction at the Chicago Academy of Design.
In 1875, Murphy moved from Chicago to New York, eventually rooming with the painters Dennis Bunker and Bruce Crane above a bakery shop. Murphy’s early work was typical of the Hudson River school but he soon fell under the sway of the loose brushwork and moody style of French Barbizon painting...
