About the Artist: Bert Van Bork was a versatile and internationally renowned artist, photographer, filmmaker, and writer. Born in Augustusburg, Saxony, Germany, he began his artistic education at 15, winning a statewide competition that allowed him to study at the prestigious Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste (State College of Fine Arts) in Berlin. There, he studied under Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, a founding member of the German Expressionist movement Die Brücke. After World War II, Van Bork continued his studies at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig, and later returned to Berlin, contributing to a post-war artist community. In 1954, Van Bork immigrated to the United States, where he settled in Chicago. Over the years, he became a highly regarded artist, printmaker, and filmmaker. He produced over 100 documentary and educational films, winning numerous national and international awards. His documentary, EYEWITNESS, the Legacy of Death Camp Art, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Short Documentary in 2000. Van Bork’s artwork spans a variety of media, including drypoint etchings, woodcuts, drawings, and watercolors. His landscapes often depict U.S. cities and Native American settlements in the Southwest, capturing the contrast between modern urban development and ancient cultural heritage. Through his work, he explored deeply personal themes, including the devastation of war and the beauty of indigenous communities. His sensitivity and respect for the cultures he encountered earned him rare access to artist studios and Native American villages, particularly in the Southwest. Van Bork’s work is represented in many prestigious collections, including the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin, the Neue Sächsische Gallery in Chemnitz, and numerous private and corporate collections worldwide.
