About the Item

French watercolour on paper view of a park in front of an Odeon cinema by Henri Clamen. Though not signed the painting was acquired from the atelier of the artist with other signed works. A charming view of people enjoying a summer's day in a park stretched out on the grass, behind them a restaurant and bar full of diners enjoying eating 'al fresco'. In the background a monumental building, an early art deco Odeon cinema from the late 1920s with its characteristic architecture. Clamen's light, free, impressionist style and his use of colour gives a vivacity and movement to the composition. A little jewel of a painting. The Odeon Cinemas we know today were created in 1928 by Oscar Deutsch. Odeon publicists liked to claim that the name of the cinemas was derived from his motto, "Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation", but it had been used for cinemas in France and Italy in the 1920s, and the word is actually Ancient Greek ᾨδεῖον, Ōideion, meaning "a place for singing".
