About the Item
David Dewey (B. 1946)
Reader's Digest Headquarters, 1996
Watercolor on paper
Sight: 24 x 18 1/2 in.
Framed: 36 x 29 3/4 x 1 in.
Living on the Maine coast, David Dewey is a watercolor painter whose work reflects his interest in architecture as well as his emotional response to geography that has wide open panoramic views, especially of water. The effect is described as both serene and disturbing because he has the ability to combine photo-real treatment of buildings such as country churches with distorted perspectives and close cropping. Often the subject seems to tower over the viewer.
Dewey earned a B.F.A. at the Philadelphia College of Art and an M.F.A. at Washington State University in Pullman. He has been a teacher at the Parson's School for Design in New York City, the Philadelphia College of Art, and at Washington State University. He currently (2006) teaches at the National Academy School of Fine Arts in New York City and the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Connecticut.

George H. Gay was well known for his watercolor landscapes, seascapes and paintings of rivers and ships, mostly along the shores of New England. Gay also painted snowscapes, but these are scarcer. It is unusual to find an oil painting by this artist, as he worked mainly in watercolor. Some of his works display a tonalist aesthetic.
He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 2, 1858, and lived in Chicago and then in 1889, settled in Bronxville, New York. Gay was a pupil of Paul Brown and Henry Elkins in Chicago.
He is known to have exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1890; Boston Art...
