About the Item
Work : Original Watercolor Painting, Unique Work. Handmade artwork. Ready to Hang.
Medium : Watercolor on Archival Fine Art paper
Artist : Deniz Bayav
Subject : Im_mortelle (Title)
In this subtle watercolor, Deniz Bayav sets a poignant contrast between the stillness of the past and the vibrancy of the present. The background, rendered like a floral bas-relief in grayscale, evokes a fossilized memory of the natural world — a botanical scene turned stone, almost archaeological.
Then, at the center of this mineral stillness, a single green leaf emerges — the only touch of color, fragile, marked, alive. It becomes the disruptive element, almost irreverent, that breathes life back into the composition. Through this contrast, Bayav poses a quiet question about the nature of immortality: does it reside in the stone, or in the fleeting pulse of the living?
With Im-mortelle, the artist offers a poetic meditation on memory, permanence, and the beauty of what fades — and endures.

Work Size : H 15.75 X W 11.42 inches - H 40 x W 29.7cm.

I have been working on the notion of opposition both in my paintings and engravings.
When we have a look at my different series from the past to the present, this opposition is sometimes achieved through obvious contrasts of the different values of the colors, sometimes with light-dark areas, sometimes by distinct texture contrasts or opposing concepts: Existence and nonexistence, birth and death, organic and inorganic, fresh and faded… Leaves, feathers, eggs, bitten apples and rotting fruits always carry marks that point to the beginning and the end. Thus, it establishes links with “vanitas” and “memento mori” in art history.
In my daily life, in my nature walks, I always search for effects, objects and organisms that remind me of this opposition and cycle and I transfer some of them to my works. This cycle and “eternal return” are treated in Thus Spoke Zarathustra as follows: “Everything goes, everything comes back; the wheel of being rolls eternally. Everything dies, everything blossoms again, the year of being runs eternally.”
