circa 1940

About the Item

This lovely watercolor painting on Arches paper features a landscape view in Provence. This typical Mediterranean country house in the south of France has a veranda and the Saint Victoire Mountain in the background (near Aix-en-Provence). The academic design by Francois Pascal (France - ?-1948) is signed on the bottom left corner, signature with an anchor. The painting was recently re-framed with an elegant white and gilded striped wood frame with fresh orange matte and acrylic glass protection. Measurements: With frame: 27.38 in. wide (69.5 cm) x 19.13 in. high (48.5 cm). Opening view: 20.88 in. wide (53 cm) x 12.63 in. high (32 cm). Note: Francois Pascal, France (? - 1948). Francois Pascal was a member of the official painters of the French National Navy. He was nominated in 1936. About the Official Painters of the French Navy: The official directory of marine painters was created in France during the July Monarchy in 1830. This directory remained up-to-date until April 2nd, 1981. Since the 14th century, France has appointed painters to decorate royal ships. Several of these painters were appointed by Richelieu (Prime Minister of King Louis XIII of France from 1624 to 1642). The title of the painter of the Navy does not give a right to any remuneration but gains access to facilities for accomplishing missions at sea on the ships of the French National Navy. The French Navy painters can add an anchor to their signatures. There are two categories of official painters; approved painters appointed for three years and renewable and permanent painters. The ideal marine painter: 1: You have to be a painter, therefore an artist, like all artists, your painting must evolve. Indeed a painter of the French Navy must accurately take part in military iconography, a painter of the Navy was to serve the Navy usefully. A French Navy painter must enter the general movement of art. 2: You have to tell the maritime history and be a witness, an actor in the event. 3: A French Navy painter is often an engraver. He can illustrate books and design posters, and he must also be a portraitist. They often use watercolor paint because it dries quickly and is easy to carry.

A very attractive and meticulously executed view of a rocky landscape within the woods dating to 1823. This would suit a library or study with its muted tones and skifull draughtsmanship. William Nicholson (1781-1844) Near Croxdale Hall Signed with initials and inscribed with title and date 1823 Pen, ink and grey wash 11 x 8 inches, image only 17 x 13 inches without frame The portrait-painter and etcher William Nicholson was born in Ovingham-on-Tyne, Northumberland, on Christmas Day 1781. His family transferred to Newcastle when his father was appointed Headmaster of the city's Grammar School. At an early age, though, Nicholson appears to have moved to Hull where he made his artistic debut, painting miniatures of officers garrisoned there. He was almost entirely self-taught, learning his craft through the close study of artworks in private and public galleries. He subsequently returned to Newcastle where he received many commissions to paint portraits of the old families of Northumberland. In 1808, he began to exhibit at the Royal Academy, continuing to do so until 1822. By 1814, Nicholson, whose mother was a Scot, had moved to Edinburgh where he set up as a miniaturist and painter in oils. Soon, however, he began to specialize in watercolour portraits. Early subjects included the actor Daniel Terry and the poet and novelist James Hogg. In 1818 he began to publish a series of Portraits of Eminent Scotsmen, etched from his own portraits and those of other painters. Besides Scott and Hogg, the subjects included the writers Robert Burns, John Wilson ('Christopher North'), and Lord Jeffrey, the painters Sir Henry Raeburn, the divines Alexander Carlyle and Alexander Cameron, the engineer James Watt, the architect John Playfair, and the song-collector and composer George Thomson...
