The artwork is framed with its original gild-wood frame with off-white matte and glass protection. Measurements: With frame: 30.69 in wide (78 cm) x 24.38 in high (62 cm). Opening view: 21.63 in wide (55 cm) x 14.57 in (37 cm). Biography: Thomas Symington Halliday (1902 - 1998) was a Scottish artist and teacher. Although Halliday was an accomplished sculptor, painter, and teacher, he is also known for his designs for stained glass windows. Halliday was born in Thornhill near Dumfries. His father was a grain merchant, and he grew up on a farm. After attending Ayr Academy, Halliday spent some years working as a marine engineer on the River Clyde in Glasgow before he enrolled at the Glasgow School of Art. Helped by the artist Norman Forrest, Halliday began his career as a sculptor in 1932 and would, in due course, produce figures of animals and birds in wood, bronze, and terracotta. Halliday worked as the Art Master at Prestwick High School for several years and taught at Ayr Academy. In 1941 he was appointed principal of the art department at the High School of Dundee, a post he retained until he retired in 1965. During World War II, Halliday painted shipbuilding and naval camouflage operations on the Clyde. Two of these paintings were purchased by the War Artists’ Advisory Committee and are held now by the Imperial War Museum in London. Later he was commissioned to paint a large mural of the Batlle of Narvik for the Royal Naval Dockyard at Rosyth. In 1947 he co-edited, with the poet George Bruce, the magazine Scottish Sculpture. For many years, Halliday lived at Wormit at Newport-on-Tay. There he carved the war memorial for the parish church and designed a coat of arms for the Town Council. Newport-on-Tay Town Council also commissioned him to produce the carving of a stag, which they presented to the Queen in 1958. He designed numerous stained glass windows, including, several for parish churches in and around Ayr and Dundee. He was a founding member of the Guild of Aviation Artists, was a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, and was elected to the Society of Scottish Artists in 1943. In 1963 he exhibited works with the New Scottish Group. Halliday also was a regular exhibitor with the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. He was awarded an MBE* in 1963. *The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is an order of British chivalry rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences. (credit: Wikipedia)

A very attractive and meticulously executed view of a rocky landscape within the woods dating to 1823. This would suit a library or study with its muted tones and skifull draughtsmanship. William Nicholson (1781-1844) Near Croxdale Hall Signed with initials and inscribed with title and date 1823 Pen, ink and grey wash 11 x 8 inches, image only 17 x 13 inches without frame The portrait-painter and etcher William Nicholson was born in Ovingham-on-Tyne, Northumberland, on Christmas Day 1781. His family transferred to Newcastle when his father was appointed Headmaster of the city's Grammar School. At an early age, though, Nicholson appears to have moved to Hull where he made his artistic debut, painting miniatures of officers garrisoned there. He was almost entirely self-taught, learning his craft through the close study of artworks in private and public galleries. He subsequently returned to Newcastle where he received many commissions to paint portraits of the old families of Northumberland. In 1808, he began to exhibit at the Royal Academy, continuing to do so until 1822. By 1814, Nicholson, whose mother was a Scot, had moved to Edinburgh where he set up as a miniaturist and painter in oils. Soon, however, he began to specialize in watercolour portraits. Early subjects included the actor Daniel Terry and the poet and novelist James Hogg. In 1818 he began to publish a series of Portraits of Eminent Scotsmen, etched from his own portraits and those of other painters. Besides Scott and Hogg, the subjects included the writers Robert Burns, John Wilson ('Christopher North'), and Lord Jeffrey, the painters Sir Henry Raeburn, the divines Alexander Carlyle and Alexander Cameron, the engineer James Watt, the architect John Playfair, and the song-collector and composer George Thomson...
