About the Item
This watercolor on paper is signed and titled at lower right Gab. Carelli / Florence.
It depicts a view of Florence taken from the Piazzale Michelangelo-animated by various figures including a friar talking to a mother with child, while another mother with child rests seated and a water bearer faces-in which some of the most important monuments on both sides of the city can be seen.
In the center is the Arno River, which divides the city into two parts, in which the Ponte Vecchio and the Uffizi overlook can be recognized.
In the historic center, the cathedral with Brunelleschi's dome, Giotto's bell tower and the dome of the Medicean Chapels, the tower of the Bargello Palace in front of the Badia Fiorentina's cusped bell tower, the Palazzo della Signoria known as Palazzo Vecchio and the cusped bell tower of Santa Maria Novella. All around are the hills of Fiesole and Settignano as far as Cercina.
Also recognizable are Ponte Vecchio and the facade of the Uffizi.
Although the historic center is so detailed, the other side of the city, the so-called Oltrarno, is more fictional, a fictional vision in which the dome of the Santo Spirito church stands out below near a hill that could be Bellosguardo or Fort Belvedere.
Gabriele Carelli is a Neapolitan artist representative of the Posillipo school, much celebrated beyond national borders: he worked in England, joining the "Royal Society of watercolors" in London, Switzerland, France, Malta and in Boston he received the gold medal to some of his paintings.
