About the Item
George David Yater was an American painter associated with the Cape Cod School of Art. He was best known for watercolors. Yater's work has been exhibited by major galleries like the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. He studied on scholarship at the John Herron Art School and summered at the Cape School of Art in the 1930s. Though his first solo show sold no works, Yater persisted, supported by WPA funds. He had a second solo show in 1938. Yater was born in Indiana in 1910 and passed away in 1993.
This quiet and skillful watercolor bears a number of the artist’s hallmarks: emotive, narrative composition; a tender but bold hand with light and shadow; and muted but distinct use of color. These elements continue to be featured in the works of many New England landscape painters today.
