Description:
This extraordinary gouache by French modernist Guy Nicod blends cubist geometry with surrealist symbolism in a striking and enigmatic composition. The scene is filled with interlocking forms, bold diagonals, and theatrical colour contrasts. At the centre, trumpet-like golden arms radiate outward from a domed structure, framed by symmetrical wings in deep purple. Large disembodied eyes appear across the composition — one on the left integrated into an arm, another in the right-hand sphere, and a third within a framed box on a checkerboard floor — imbuing the work with a dreamlike and symbolic quality.
A radiant stairway of alternating red and yellow bands leads upward into the domed centre, drawing the viewer into the scene. On the right, a red-and-white spiral motif and intricate smaller forms suggest architectural and mechanical detail. At the bottom left, a stylised sword lies diagonally, further heightening the sense of allegory and narrative. Against a background of vivid turquoise and blue, a small bird flies past a glowing orb, reinforcing the surreal atmosphere.
