About the Item
Victorian Early Twentieth Century Marine Watercolour of Customs House Quay Falmouth. It is a Signed Watercolour on paper, laid on board with a mount and Framed and Glazed.
By the celebrated Newlyn School Artist Henry Scott Tuke 1858 - 1929, he was known for his loose Impressionist style of painting and most of his work was small scale watercolours. He initially moved to Newlyn to join the Artists Colony there but had settled in Falmouth by 1885. He used a former French Brigantine the "Julie of Nantes" as a floating studio. He was known as a Maritime Artist as well as achieving great accolades for his nude paintings of young men which often achieve enormously high prices. His work is incredibly sensitive and well observed, whether he is painting a clipper at sea, or fisherfolk at the Quay or bathers he paints with style and confidence. He was a full member of the Royal Academy and his work was exhibited widely during his lifetime. His work remains highly collectable and is in some very important collections worldwide.
