Howard Schroedter
"Morning Mist" Waterscape in Black Charcoal on Paper signed by Howard Schroedter

1982

About the Item

"Morning Mist" is an original charcoal drawing on paper by Howard Schroedter. This drawing depicts a misty lake in darkness. The artist signed the piece in the lower right. 24 1/4" x 18" art 25 1/2" x 19" frame Howard Schroedter's paintings restore an experience for the art viewer that has become rare with the passing of such American artists as Charles Burchfield, Marsden Hartley, and Fairfield Porter. His moody, expressionist landscapes help us remember the power of specific places to arouse acute feelings in the sensitive artist. Schroedter's paintings are not the casual pictures of the artist in search of the picturesque. Schroedter knows the locales of his art as well as Edward Hopper knew Provincetown, Massachusetts, as intimately as Porter knew Southampton, Long Island. He did about a hundred paintings at Myyaka, Florida, while on a year's leave from the UW-Milwaukee where Schroedter has taught for twenty-nine years. He has created a vaster body of work focusing on Hatch Lake in Waupaca County, Wisconsin, where he has maintained a vacation home for more than twenty years. Schroedter's paintings are his contemplations of the mystery that envelopes these places and his own sense of smallness in relation to the lands. The viewer sees Myyaka and Hatch Lake as filtered through Schroedter's temperament. The air in his Myyaka scene is sparkly and clear, but quite often the atmospheres in Schroedter's pictures are dark and moody and owe something to the art of Joseph Friebert, Schroedter's one-time teacher whom he venerates. Schroedter served as chairman of the UW-Milwaukee art department. Says Schroedter: I have never felt a strong call to head for New York to try to make it big. I was born in Milwaukee. It is not a good place to be if you're an artist dying to make a big reputation, but otherwise it is a great place to live and work. I feel fortunate that I found a place in the same school where I myself learned to paint. Howard Schroedter taught art education and prepared his art students to become art teachers as well. He was very highly respected in the University system and served on the University committee, the select group of six professors from throughout the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee system that represented and advised the University Board of Regents on significant matters pertaining to the entire professorial staff.

    By Sylvia Spicuzza
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
In this drawing, Sylvia Spicuzza presents the viewer with a dark, subtle view of two milkweed pods, bursting forth with cotton. • "Monkey Island at Washington Park Zoo" Graphite & Charcoal by Francesco Spicuzza
    By Francesco Spicuzza
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Monkey Island at Washington Park Zoo" is an original graphite and charcoal drawing on paper by Francesco Spicuzza. It depicts a number of figures gazing out at a monkey enclosure at a zoo. The artist signed the piece in the lower left. 8 1/2" x 11 3/4" art 17 1/4" x 21 1/8" frame Francesco J. Spicuzza, born in Sicily on July 23, 1883, came to America at the age of 8. He supported himself as a fruit peddler until a newspaperman gave him $4 a week to go to school. He attended classes at the Milwaukee Art Students League, where he studied under Alexander Mueller. There he learned to paint in the then-fashionable "Munich School" technique, with detailed realism in heavy browns and grayed-out hues. Spicuzza completed eight grades in four years, and then in 1911, three businessmen advanced him enough money to allow him to study in New York under artist and teacher John Carlson. It was during this time that Spicuzza changed his style of painting, developing an impressionistic use of color, form and atmospheric renditions. After a period of grinding poverty, one of Spicuzza's pictures won a major New York competition. It was the first of 60 wins, both in the U.S. and Paris. He became a fashionable painter, and many of the leading collections have his work. Spicuzza's typical works were beach scenes, still life, landscapes and portraits done in pastels, oils, ink, charcoal and watercolors. Much of his work traced the history of Milwaukee in the early 1900s. He was probably best known for his scenes of women and children splashing in...
