About the Artist:
George Vander Sluis was a prominent figure in American art, best known for his acrylic paintings and distinguished career as an educator. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Vander Sluis studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Broadmoor Academy (later the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center). Throughout his career, he became highly respected for his work and teaching.
He was a dedicated educator, teaching at the Broadmoor Academy from 1940-43 and at Syracuse University from 1945-82, where he became Associate Dean of the School of Arts. Vander Sluis was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1951-52 and recognized as an Outstanding Educator of America by the Ford Foundation in 1975.
His artwork was widely exhibited in major galleries and museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. Vander Sluis’s works are part of prestigious collections, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Everson Museum of Art, and Rochester Memorial Art Gallery.

George Vander Sluis was a painter in acrylics of figure, portrait and landscape, a muralist, and an art educator, who spent much of his career in Syracuse, New York. There he was a Professor of Painting and Drawing at Syracuse University beginning 1947. Between 1940 and 1942, and 1945 to 1947, he was a teacher at the Colorado Fine Arts Center in Colorado Springs. He studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Colorado Fine Arts Center and from 1951 to 1952, had a Fulbright Scholarship to Italy. Other recognition included receiving a Ford Foundation grant and being named Outstanding Educator of America in 1975. George Vander Sluis was a muralist for the WPA in the 1930s. Murals from that period and subsequent commissions are on barns in Central New York State, in the post offices of Rifle, Colorado and Riverton Wyoming and the Hotel Syracuse in New York.

BIOGRAPHY:
Antonio Petruccelli (1907-1994) began his career as a textile designer. He became a freelance illustrator in 1932 after winning several House Beautiful cover illustration contests.
In addition to 24 Fortune magazine covers, four New Yorker covers, several for House Beautiful, Collier’s, and other magazines he did numerous illustrations for Life magazine from the 1930s – 60s.
‘Tony was Mr. Versatility for Fortune. He could do anything, from charts and diagrams to maps, illustrations, covers, and caricatures,’ said Francis Brennan, the former art director for Fortune.
