Jenne Magafan
Windmill on the Plains, 1940s Watercolor & Ink Mixed Media Modernist Landscape

1941

About the Item

"Windmill on the Plains" is a captivating watercolor and ink on paper painting by 20th century Colorado artist Jenne Magafan. Created in the 1940s, this work depicts a large windmill standing proudly in the middle of a rural Colorado farm scene, complete with sheds and fencing in the background. The piece beautifully captures the essence of the American Midwest, blending natural elements with the simplicity of farm life. Presented in a custom frame, the painting’s outer dimensions measure 24 ½ x 20 ½ inches, with the image size being 14 x 11 inches. Provenance: Estate of Ethel Magafan. About the Artist: Jenne Magafan, alongside her twin sister Ethel, was born in Chicago to a Greek immigrant father and a Polish mother. The family moved to Colorado due to health concerns with their father, first settling in Colorado Springs and then in Denver. Their father was a great supporter of their artistic ambitions, and after his sudden death in 1932, the twins found mentorship in their high school art teacher, Helen Perry. Perry’s determination to guide them led to the twins' first artistic lessons with noted artist Frank Mechau. Jenne and Ethel both attended the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs, where their passion for mural painting flourished. Over the years, Jenne won seven major mural commissions, including a highly regarded project at the Albion, Nebraska Post Office. Her murals were part of the federally sponsored WPA project, a movement that provided artists with opportunities during the Great Depression. In 1945, Jenne and Ethel visited the renowned art colony in Woodstock, New York, and soon after, Jenne moved there with her husband, Edward Chavez. During this time, Jenne’s work was featured at prestigious institutions like the Los Angeles Museum of Art and the National Academy of Design. Later, the couple traveled to Italy on a Fulbright Scholarship, and Jenne’s time in Greece was pivotal for her artistic growth. In 1952, just after returning to the U.S., Jenne tragically passed away at the young age of 54. Despite her untimely death, she left behind a legacy as one of Colorado’s most influential artists. This piece showcases the tranquil beauty of Colorado’s rural landscape, demonstrating Jenne Magafan’s masterful technique in capturing the essence of American life.
