Juan Garcia-Nunez
Iceberg Drawing 2: Black and White Landscape Drawing of Iceberg in Water, Framed

$1,250

About

Black and white landscape drawing of a giant iceberg Graphite on paper in white frame with 8-ply white mat 8 x 10 inches unframed, 18 x 22 inches framed Unique, contemporary grey scale graphite drawing of an iceberg showing ice above and below a waterline that appears very three dimensional. Graphite is first applied in a heavy layer and is then erased in sections to highlight the form of the iceberg and reflections of the water and sky. Artist Statement: Icebergs have names, personalities, individual marks, and a sense of direction thanks to the ocean’s currents. They have a relatively short life once they cave from a main ice shelf. During the short life expectancy of 2-3 years, Icebergs remain gracefully dangerous to man’s travelling and commercial activities. Since 1972, sophisticated iceberg tracking databases around the world have followed these gentle giants once they venture off into the deep ocean. These drawings and sculptures portray Icebergs, each with a unique character, stance and personality; a document that leaves a testament to their delicate pride at a moment in their journey to their final melting spot. Placing them in a glass dome display case is the effort to preserve what would be an inevitable fate. No one never finds the same iceberg twice. Trained as an Architect, Mr. Garcia-Nunez's main interest for the past 13 years has been the theoretical and poetic exploration of space and form. Painting, video, film, philosophy and science have entered his work through the act of architectural conception, design and construction. His work has been exhibited in New York, Connecticut and Latin America. Noteworthy shows include Myths, Images and Metaphors at the Venezuelan Art Center; Constructed Paintings, solo show at Doma Gallery in New York City, and "Architecture, Science and Reason at Higgins Hall Gallery in New York, among others. He has been awarded the NARA/TOTO World Architecture Trienniel inJapan, second prize finalist; also a Special Mention from the Museum of the National Arts Foundation, as well as the Lloyd Warren Fellowship: 74th Paris Prize, finalist. Among his videos there is The Whispering Eye, also From Space to Memory and The Bridge.
