About the Item
Small, impressionist style en plein air landscape pastel drawing on paper in gold frame
Sight dimensions: 6 x 12 inches, 11.5 x 17.5 inches in gold frame
Signed, verso
This small, horizontal pastel en plein air drawing of a country landscape was made by Hudson Valley based artist, Judy Reynolds, in 2018. The composition features a peaceful landscape as the sun gently begins to set on a country field with a stream flowing through it. Soft pink light from the setting sun reflects onto the tall grasses below and contrasts against green hills and a pale blue sky. With this delicate palette of soft yellow, blue, pink and green the artist transports the viewer to the marshy landscape. The drawing's sight dimensions are 6 x 12 inches while it measures 11.5 x 17.5 inches in a contemporary gold frame. The piece is ready to hang with wire installed on the back.
Artist Statement:
Primarily self-taught, I’ve created landscapes and still-life paintings in either oil or pastel medium for over 30 years. As a native of the Hudson Valley, most of my work is centered upon the Hudson River and surrounding mountains, fields, and marshes, but I’m also inspired by the dreamy marshlands in Maine. My favorite seasons to capture on canvas are late fall and early spring filled with sunsets, storm endings and foggy marshes, rich with the changing colors of the seasons.

- Rooftops (Framed 1970's New York Cityscape Landscape Drawing by William Clutz)By William ClutzLocated in Hudson, NYAbstracted New York City landscape drawing of urban rooftops and tree tops "Rooftops", created by William Clutz in 1977 30 x 20 inches, charcoal and pastel on paper 33 x 25 inches in light wood frame This framed pastel on paper was made in 1977 by William Clutz. It features an abstracted depiction of New York City rooftops as seen from a high window. Of particular note is the artist's technique with pastel; a wonderful texture and motion is created by closely woven striated lines. Sunlight reflects off brown rooftops and peaking green tree tops. The charcoal and pastel drawing is framed in a natural light wood frame with non-reflective glass and wire backing for installation. About the Artist: Renowned as the “impressionist of the contemporary metropolis”, William Clutz uses the city, in its entirety, as his subject. Pedestrians crossing streets become stars of the stage; the hustle and bustle of traffic and surrounding buildings are the chorus; each play their part in the overall composition. Lighting and color shift this observation of the everyday into a remarkable wonder. “It is surely Clutz”, wrote Gerrit Henry in Art News, 1979, “an artist who has rejected the niceties of representation in favor of the quintessence.” The young artist moved to New York City in 1955 and just four years later had his first solo exhibit at the Condon Riley Gallery. Clutz went on to show in major uptown galleries such as David Herbert, where, notably in 1962 he received a NYTimes review titled, Return of the Figure. That same year, his role in the revival of figuration was further solidified with inclusion in the MoMA group show, Recent Painting USA, The Figure. This was a pivotal turning point from which emerged a 50-year exhibiting career. - 'Woodland Stream', Paris, New York, Hudson River School, Luminism, AIC, PAFABy Arthur PartonLocated in Santa Cruz, CASigned lower right, 'Arthur Parton' (American, 1842-1914) and painted circa 1885. This notable Hudson River School painter first studied under William Trost Richards, from whom he gained a grounding in the technical aspects of his craft, and, subsequently, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. While in Philadelphia, he began to exhibit with success and, in 1864, moved to New York where he continued to exhibit before leaving for Europe in 1869. In France, he was influenced by the works of the Barbizon painters and then furthered his studies in Paris and London (1870) before continuing to Scotland (1871). Upon his return to America, he would go on to establish himself as a major figure in the art world, maintaining a studio at 51 West 10th Street from 1874 to 1893. Best known for his landscapes of the Adirondacks and Catskill Mountains, Parton also painted in England and Scotland. During his career, he explored several styles including Tonalism and Impressionism, but remained closely influenced by the Hudson River style including Luminism. Parton was a member of the American Watercolor Society, the Artists Fund Society and, from 1871, the National Academy of Design, becoming a National Academician in 1884. Parton exhibited widely and with success including at the Corcoran Gallery of Art (1907-1908, 1910), Brooklyn Artists Association (1866-85), Philadelphia Centennial Exposition (1876), Boston Art Club (1882-1909), New York City (1886 gold medal), Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1889 Temple gold medal, 1891, 1896-97, 1905), Paris Exposition Universelle (1889 honorable mention), St Louis Exposition (1904 medal), the Art Institute of Chicago and, for more than 50 years, at the National Academy of Design (1862-1914, 1896 prize). Parton gained widespread recognition after his painting of the Shenandoah River (1872) was published in William Cullen Bryant...Category

- "Visit to the Plantation, " 19th Century Southern Genre SceneBy Edward Lamson HenryLocated in Larchmont, NYEdward Lamson Henry (1841 - 1919) Visit to the Plantation Watercolor, gouache, and pencil on paper 10 1/8 x 15 3/4 inches Signed lower right: E. L. Henry Provenance: Private Collection, Connecticut Exhibited: Tarrytown, New York, Lyndhurst Flower & Antiques Show, Hawthorne Fine Art, April 5 - 7, 2019 (images above). Born in Charleston, South Carolina and orphaned at an early age, Henry had sufficient means, family ties and social connections to enter the art circles of New York at the highest level. Following early art studies in that city with Walter Mason Oddie, he enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1858, coming under the instruction of Paul Weber. His most formative period, however, occurred in Paris between 1860 and 1862 at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts. There, he worked with the academicians Joseph-Nicholas Robert-Fleury and Marc-Charles-Gabriel Gleyre, whose penchant for scenes of classical antiquity cast in nostalgic terms exerted a permanent influence. Henry returned to New York in 1862 and established a studio at the popular Tenth Street Studio Building. During the Civil War, Henry served as captain's clerk on board a Union supply ship in the James River. From this vantage point, he made a series of sketches, dating to 1864, based on his observations of the Virginia countryside under siege from Union forces. Station on the Morris and Essex Railroad, also painted in 1864, marked the beginning of Henry's interest in sentimental depictions of antiquated train stations. He was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design in 1867 and elevated to full academician in 1869. That same year, The Old Westover House, a painting based on the artist's war sketches, was exhibited, the earliest of a series of works which recounted transformations in Southern life and culture. Henry made a study trip to Europe in 1871 and, upon his return in 1872, completed his monumental City Point, Virginia, Headquarters of General Grant...Category
