About the Item

Detailed watercolor by German artist Julius Theophil Wentscher (The Elder) (Germany, 1842-1910). Baltic Sea coast near Warnicken, Konigsberg, East Prussia, Germany. The scene is reminiscent of Monterey Bay at the turn of the century with Lupines and Cypress trees. Signed and dated in the lower left corner J. Wentscher 1910). Presented in an antique frame with original glass from the workshop of Julius Grimm (Austrian, 1842-1906). Paper size: 12.5"H x 17.63"W Julius's favorite locale to paint was the sandy and beautiful Coast of Samland or Sambia on the Baltic Sea near Konigsberg formerly East Prussia later Poland and then Russia. Julius was born in Graudenz, Germany 1842. Graudenz, East Prussia (Prussia was a German state on the southeast coast of the Baltic Sea. It formed the German Empire under Prussian rule when it united the German states in 1871. ) German landscape painter. After beginning his training at the Königsberg academy W. continued his studies in Berlin under H. Gude. He lived and worked in Berlin, with subjects from the Baltic sea and the Courland Spit were distinctive for his oeuvre. Mus.: Braunschweig, Königsberg. Lit.: Thieme-Becker. Julius Grimm (Austrian, 1842-1906) was a photographer and astronomer who worked in Germany. Grimm founded a photographic company in Offenburg in 1873. There he created astronomical recordings as well as enlargements of plant and animal objects and received numerous prizes and awards. He made micro and macro photographs for scientific works and atlases, some of which were also reproduced using collotype printing. In his studio and art institute he ran an astronomical-photographic observatory.

Ejnar Hansen studied at Copenhagen's Royal Academy of Art before moving to the United States in 1914 and settling in Pasadena in 1924. An ardent proponent of modernist color theory, Hansen became an influential teacher at the Chouinard School, the Otis Art Institute, the John Muir College, and the Pasadena School of Fine Arts. He exhibited widely and with success, including in Denmark and at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the 1939 World's Fair and at the Cincinnati Museum.
