Karen Druker
Purple Cypress Tree - Coastal Fauvist Vertical Landscape

c. 2010

About the Item

Brightly colored Fauvist coastal landscape of a vivid purple cypress tree at the edge of the water, under a bright yellow sky and orange sun by Karen Druker (American, 1945). Signed "Druker" in the lower right corner. Presented in a cream mat. No frame. Image size: 30"H x 23"W Karen Druker (American, b. 1945) in an artist from the San Francisco Bay Area. She has been painting since 2001, after retiring from her catering and event planning company. Druker is an associate member of the National Watercolor Society and co-chair of Watermedia Workshops for The Santa Clara County Watercolor Society. She has been participating in Silicon Valley Open Studios since 2003. Artist’s Statement: I am continuously exploring and experimenting in my art! Creativity is my long suit. I have no fear! I only paint for myself. It is just a piece of paper, I tell myself. It is a CANVAS THAT CAN BE REPAINTED AGAIN AND AGAIN - and it will get better! And it does. I allow mistakes! I love painting in series, to ever get deeper into the subject. I have painted up to 60 versions of the same still life set-up, emphasizing color, value, size, direction, shape, line, etc. in various versions. Currently most of my work is abstract. My favorite artists are Matisse and Picasso. They continued to experiment and try new methods and medias throughout their lives, and I am inspired to do the same - keep it fresh! Keep it new! Doing ceramic wall pieces is next.

  • "Sioux Camp" Original Mixed Media on Paper Landscape by Tom Perkinson, Framed
    By Tom Perkinson
    Located in Encino, CA
"Sioux Camp," an original mixed media on paper by Tom Perkinson, is a piece for the true collector. His use of saturated violets, vivid yellows, and resplendent oranges pushes color to almost-otherworldly realms. The viewer is invited to step into the painting to explore the scene within and imagine gazing at an easel of a plein-air painter with the blue sky, clouds, and grasses in full view. Here, Perkinson chose to depict a Sioux settlement. A fire with smoke rising helps set the stage for day turning to night. The scene is filled with activity. Women watching over playing children. A father teaching a lesson. A group of three or more watching over the horses. Others occupy the settlement out of view. Perkinson describes his style of painting as "Romantic Realism," a technique that incorporates two iconic art movements. This style, in combination with the imagination of the artist, produces remarkable results, showcasing Perkinson's keen ability to capture emotion, nature, and life - all in a brushstroke. Both his technical talent and choice of subject matter pair perfectly with its carved, custom, antique-finish, gilt frame. This masterful work would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for landscapes, impressionism, romanticism, realism, Southwestern Art, Native American themed art, plein-air painting, and nature. "The Sioux nation were the largest of all the Native American tribes and consisted of three divisions which were based on their location, dialect and their subculture. The Sioux tribe originally lived along the upper Mississippi in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin. They were forced west by the French and their Chippewa allies. During the migration west to the Great Plains, the tribe split into three divisions - the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota. The names Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota all mean "Allies" or "Confederates." The Sioux tribe fiercely resisted the white encroachment of the Great Plains. The names of the most famous chiefs who led the Sioux tribe into battle were Sitting Bull, Red Cloud, Chief Gall, Crazy Horse, Rain in the Face, and Kicking Bear. Famous conflicts included the Sioux Wars (1854-1890), Red Cloud's War (1865-1868), the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn, and the 1890 Ghost Dance...
