Blue Mountain Landscape in Watercolor on Paper, Double-Sided Art
A pastel watercolor landscape with a distant snow-capped mountain, by California artist, Lucile Marie Johnston (1907-1994, American). Double-sided watercolor with modernist sailboat image on back in primary colors.
Signature, "Lucile Johnston '70" at the bottom left. Presented in a new cream mat with foam core backing.

Born in Santa Rosa, California on May 26, 1907, Lucile Johnston settled in Glendale 1930-1939, later moving to Carmel and then Pacific Grove in Monterey County, California where she remained. she managed Marsh's Oriental Antiques Shop for many years. She exhibited widely, including the California Watercolor Society, (1933). She died in Monterey on Nov. 10, 1994. Johnston is listed in relevant art dictionaries including: Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940"

Preston as the new home of the Boston Society for Natural History, which had been founded in 1830. About the artist:
Born in Santa Rosa, California to a pioneering California family, Elizabeth Hoen was known for her watercolor paintings, many of them landscapes, in impressionist style. Her father, Berthold Hoen started a trading post in the Carillo adobe, the first building erected in the Sonoma Valley. He also helped survey and lay out the city of Santa Rosa.
Elizabeth Hoen is not only the first painter to have their work cataloged into the Sonoma County Museum’s collection, but she was also a prolific artist in California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and maintained a studio during a period when California art was largely dominated by men. She was from an important family in early Sonoma County history. Her father, Berthold Hoen, purchased land from the Carrillo family that would one day be...
