Signed lower right 'Marie McDonnell Roberts A.W.S. (American, 1915-2013) and painted circa 1965.
A moody watercolor landscape showing a stand of trees and a distant mountain beneath clouded blue skies. An exceptional work by this Massachusetts-born artist who lived and painted in California and was a signature member of the American Watercolor Society.
Marie graduated from Lawrence High School and the Massachusetts College of Art. She began her professional career as an illustrator in Boston and later continued as a watercolor portrait and landscape artist, emphasizing California and European landscapes. For many years, she exhibited widely and with success throughout the United States. In addition to her career as a fine artist, Marie also taught classes in artistic structure and design and her book 'The Artist's Design: Probing the Hidden Order' remains in print.
