Maurice Lambert
Architecture Sketches Study Drawing, Romane Church in France by Maurice Lambert

Late 19th Century

About the Item

Architectural Study for the Restoration of Saint-Pierre Church in Avon, France. This unique architectural study was created as part of a church renovation project in a suburb of Paris. The sketches focus on the restoration of the front porch of Saint-Pierre Church in Avon, Seine-et-Marne, near Paris. The artist, Maurice Lambert, used a combination of watercolor, ink, and sepia pencil to craft this detailed study, which presents multiple perspectives of the porch: - Lower center bottom: A complete drawing of the porch itself. - Left side: A close-up view of the underside of the framework. - Right side: A view of the framework from above. - Top left corner: A quoted plan of the porch. A personal touch is found in the lower right-hand corner, where a handwritten dedication reads: "To my old mate and pal. A fond recollection of school." Maurice Lambert's signature follows this heartfelt note. For further historical information, please refer to the last three pictures, which showcase views of the original building. Presentation & Condition The study is beautifully showcased in a wood frame with glass protection. Dimensions With frame: 40.94 in wide (104 cm) × 27.56 in high (70 cm). View: 38.98 in wide (99 cm) × 25.59 in high (65 cm). Note: Designated as a Historic Monument in 1840, the Saint-Pierre d'Avon Church (77) stands as a remarkable testament to centuries of architectural evolution. Built in the 12th century, its bell tower was added in the 13th century, while the choir and portal were completed in the 16th century. One of its most distinctive features is the porch, where Madame de Maintenon, a devoted parish benefactress, taught catechism to the children of Avon beneath an elegant and authentic 17th-century awning. The church became a royal place of worship, frequented by the kings of France, who stayed at the nearby hunting lodge known as "Beautiful Water Fountain." On its historic registers lies the baptismal certificate of Louis XIII, recorded in 1606. Saint-Pierre d'Avon houses an important collection of tombstones, including that of Jean de Monaldeschi, squire of Queen Christina of Sweden, who was assassinated at her order in the stag gallery of the castle. Among its historical artifacts is also the tombstone of mathematician Étienne Bezout, a significant figure in mathematical history. A true architectural and historical gem, this church continues to preserve the legacies of French royalty, scholars, and figures from centuries past.

Early 19th Century English watercolour of woodland near Croxdale Hall
Located in Harkstead, GB
A very attractive and meticulously executed view of a rocky landscape within the woods dating to 1823. This would suit a library or study with its muted tones and skifull draughtsmanship. William Nicholson (1781-1844) Near Croxdale Hall Signed with initials and inscribed with title and date 1823 Pen, ink and grey wash 11 x 8 inches, image only 17 x 13 inches without frame The portrait-painter and etcher William Nicholson was born in Ovingham-on-Tyne, Northumberland, on Christmas Day 1781. His family transferred to Newcastle when his father was appointed Headmaster of the city's Grammar School. At an early age, though, Nicholson appears to have moved to Hull where he made his artistic debut, painting miniatures of officers garrisoned there. He was almost entirely self-taught, learning his craft through the close study of artworks in private and public galleries. He subsequently returned to Newcastle where he received many commissions to paint portraits of the old families of Northumberland. In 1808, he began to exhibit at the Royal Academy, continuing to do so until 1822. By 1814, Nicholson, whose mother was a Scot, had moved to Edinburgh where he set up as a miniaturist and painter in oils. Soon, however, he began to specialize in watercolour portraits. Early subjects included the actor Daniel Terry and the poet and novelist James Hogg. In 1818 he began to publish a series of Portraits of Eminent Scotsmen, etched from his own portraits and those of other painters. Besides Scott and Hogg, the subjects included the writers Robert Burns, John Wilson ('Christopher North'), and Lord Jeffrey, the painters Sir Henry Raeburn, the divines Alexander Carlyle and Alexander Cameron, the engineer James Watt, the architect John Playfair, and the song-collector and composer George Thomson...
